Questions before buying a 335i
Hi, I've been in the market for a manual 335i for some time now and came across just the one I wanted! It's a 07 E92 335i black saphire on tan interior with all the options including navi and logic 7 with manual transmission. It's got a clean title and is going for $24,500, but with 53,000 miles... First question is, do you think this is a good deal and if I should go for it? Before I get it, I want to check to see if it has the oil cooler, but of course aside from the fuel pump, there won't be a lot of other expected problems will there? The fuel pump warranty has got me covered so I'd assume it's okay to buy even though the bumper to bumper warranty is over.
Also, I plan on modding the car a lot, so what would you suggest to be a first off mod? I'm thinking of doing a few mods performance wise and then aesthetics after. Performance wise, I was looking at the Quaife LSD which is going for $1700 on **********s and then go for a tune. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks! |

Seems like a good price for the mileage, is it CPO? The extended warranty is useful in most situations as lots of things can go wrong in the 335 that you won't have to pay for. Thats what made the deal for me. Fuel pump should be fine as its warrantied until 120k and can be lemoned. Only thing is that the mileage is a bit high if its not CPO, and if you get it non-CPO be ready to pay for anything that goes wrong. Also, is it 1-owner?
If it has the sport package then it has the oil cooler. |

Have you checked to see if it has any mods already? i.e. black grills/etc..It's possible it could have JB but you wouldn't know unless you checked the ECU. But I'm sure if it did, the previous owner would have taken it out..
I'd check the history to see if the HPFP has already been replaced and if so, what the part number is. I think it's a pretty good deal if it's in good shape. You know for sure it has sports package? As far as mods, the list is long. I personally like to get most cosmetics done first cause I like my car to look the way I want before I do anything else. There are so many different exhausts, tunes, intakes, intercoolers, downpipes, etc. to choose from. Go over to the turbo, cosmetics and suspension sections and search for each mod and read up as thoroughly as possible before you start asking questions. There are so many knowlegable people that hang out in those sections that you can learn from. And if you search first about each topic before posting, then you will get much better help from them....

Yeah the vehicle isn't a CPO one, but it is a one owner and clean title. I know it has sport package also because he told me it has all the packages and it has the sport seats. How can I tell though if it has premium package and logic 7?

Logic 7 was standard on the 335 in 07. As far as the premium pkg, you can't be sure but check the rearview mirror. If it has the compass in it, it is probably a premium pkg car.

Seems like a good price. I would get an independent inspection done at a bmw dealer and have them print the maintenance records for you. Rather spend a few bucks than waste thousands on a bad car. They'll probably try to sell you a ton of stuff while u are there, like extended maintenance/warranty, tire/wheel insurance, ect. Most of that stuff is overpriced and not worth it, imo, but the warranty might be worth it depending on the price they give you.

Not really...if they bought the last 07 that rolled off the assembly line in August like I did that's 3 years or 17-18k a year.
If they bought an early 07, that's just over 13k a year. If it doesnt have a CPO I agreee w the OP in obtaining an inspection. Chances it will need brakes soon and maybe a clutch which at the stealership may run a couple thousand.

To check for the oil cooler turn the wheels all the way to the right or left and check the drivers side wheel well. You will see slats in the plastic and behind it will be the shiny aluminum oil cooler. I'd try to find one under 50k miles and finance the Easy Care extended warranty. Mine isn't CPO, but passed CPO except it needed new tires and wheels, but I have the paper work with the inspection data. So I paid 2 grand less, with a warranty, for a car that is CPO worthy. Maintenance records are confidential so you probably can't get them printed off until you buy the car, but I agree with the independent inspection it's worth every penny. My last E90 had secretly been in a wreck (by the 1st owner) and BMW found out and entered it into the system.

The owner should be able to supply you with past service history, so see if turbo/wastegates and fuel injectors have been replaced. These parts were upgraded as production went on. If the car still has it original parts, these items will probably need to be replaced sooner than later.

I think you're kidding yourself

My 07 335i coupe with 37K, and CPO, sold for about $29K 6 months ago. That would have come with the CPO warranty that would cover all the above-mentioned parts. Is it more expensive? yes. But would the peace of mind be worth it? I think definitely. I heard of one person who sucked water into their N54, to the tune of $26,000 repair. Now that's hard to swallow. Your experience may vary, but be warned: don't think that car is going to be like a Honda civic and just need a couple hundred bucks in repairs every six months.

This is actually not true despite what others say. Mine was built in late 06 and came with a factory oil cooler.

I consider 15k miles/year on the high end of average miles driven. Not saying it's a bad car, but initially appears to have been driven more than normal. Since it's CPO, I'm sure you'll find it just fine.

Actually its on the passenger side, and you can see/feel the slats without cocking the wheel.

A couple more questions... since this 335i doesn't have the warranty anymore, should I just be free to modify it as I wish without worrying what the dealer thinks? Would the fuel pump 120k mile warranty still apply after I modify it?

Damn that's cheap. Any old chump can get himself in one, eh?
P.S. - I wouldn't buy one of these cars w/o warranty.
