Bad Gas Mileage?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else gets bad gas mileage no matter how they drive their car. I drive it heavy footed sometimes and get 17 MPG. For a week i babied it and barely rose above 2k RPM, and got about 18.5 My RFT are dead and I am getting them replaced, so maybe that might improve it a bit. I drive mostly combined city and highway, but everyday I drive highway @ 70 MPH for 12 miles from my house to my college. Anyone else have bad gas mileage?

Ouch... I only get 17-18 mpg only when I am driving hard in the city with lots of stops, gear changes around 5k.... I get about ~32mpg on highway with 75-78mph.

Check the mileage gauge in the speedo to see how your instantaneous rates are.

Mileage is really related to throttle opening more than anything else; ie. how far the pedal is pushed down. You can be cruising at 20 in 2nd gear and getting ~12 MPG or less, or shift to 3rd and knock it up to 19 or more. With the amount of torque these cars make, don't be afraid to cruise at 1500-2000 RPM in a higher gear.

Using the cruise on the highway will help out quite a bit as well. I drive a city\fwy mix and am averaging 22 odd. HTH,

I get slightly better mileage with the winter tires than with the summer RFTs. I am averaging 28 MPG with mixed city/highway.

While the non RFTs on my 128i are too new to tell, I got 28.5 mpg on my Z4 both with the original RFTs and with the replacement non run flats. So I doubt that tires will make a difference unless they are woefully under inflated.

My 128i 'vert yields 30 mpg at 75 mph with no wind or A/C, and about 21~22 in town.

Assuming you have checked the accuracy of your mpg figures by dividing true miles traveled by gallons used over at least 3 tanksful of gas, anything below 27 mpg @70 mph indicates some sort of problem. Even if you are hitting extreme headwinds, it should balance out on the return trip.

I'd see a dealer.

I definitely see a difference depending on how I drive my car. A handful of launches up the on-ramp or a couple of traffic jams during the evening commute can have a noticeable impact on fuel mileage for that tank.

A lot comes down to how hard you accelerate. Short-shifting doesn't save the way slow, gentle acceleration does. But that's not much fun, is it?

17-18 MPG city. On the highway, I've gotten up to 30.

I probably do 30% stop-and-go., 70% highway, and I'm at 23 MPG lifetime average. I've gotten 28 MPG on trips where I've had a max speed in the triple digits.

I average 18.8 driving hard everywhere, but that includes very little highway driving - and most highway driving is 85-95 mph and often in 5th gear, not 6th. Considering how I drive I am quite pleased. Once or twice just for kicks I did a couple days in "economy driving mode"...which netted me around 26-27 mpg in combined driving...and lots of boredom! I don't know how anyone can drive on the highway at 60 mph in one of these cars, honestly. Might as well just get out and walk.

For me, it's mostly a matter of driving conservatively when I'm in stop-and-go traffic anyway. No point in racing to a red light that's red...

I agree with that, in fact that's kind of idiotic to be speeding between red lights. By non-highway driving I am referring more to the secondary, country, and lightly populated suburban roads I do much of my driving on. When I'm in New Haven etc, I just go with the flow of urban crawl.

If I am in the city, I will get 22-24 per tank, if im out on the highway, closer to 28-30.

It is actually better mileage then my 08 civic si. Prolly cuz i dont need to flog it to feel like i'm going fast.

Although I have a 135i MT (2010 with about 3k miles), it averages 21 mpg around town and on a recent 300 mile Interstate trip, it averaged 25 mph one way and 26 mph the other, while running around 3k rpm. Overage mileage is 23.x. I verify the OBC mileage with external measurements recorded in an iPhone app called Road Trip and the overall average matches the car's computer readout almost exactly.

My was about 19.8 MPG and need to fill up right around 260 miles on a tank, not sure if the reading was correct.

Here's what you need to do. First off, make sure you're filling up with 91 Octane gas. The next time you're on the highway, reset your average consumption counter. Then hit 75mph, pop it into 6th gear, and turn on the cruise control. Toward the end of your drive (while STILL cruising at 75 on the highway), read your average consumption. Should be up around 28-32. If not, take the car back to BMW.

I suspect there's nothing wrong with your car, it's probably just your driving habits. I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean you may be able to squeeze a lot more juice out of your car by altering the way you shift, accelerate, etc. Just check to make sure you're getting the proper mileage on the highway as described above. If not, take your car back to BMW and go for a test drive with them. Your car should perform to the ratings listed in their official product spec sheet!
