Bedding in the Brakes?
Can anyone confirm what boyce'06 330i is saying in this thread before I go out and do it?: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39345

I'm not a professional either, but I did bed in my brakes, in a similar manner to what he described. I can't say whether it's needed or not but after reading about it I seems like a good idea to me. If you do a search for bedding in brakes I've posted a site that I used. It's Zeckhausen's site.

I used the instructions on the Zeckhausen site. He talks about the bluish tint in his instructions.
All I can tell you is mine are light years better. |

Zeckhausen's site says to do eight near-stops. Now my question is, there's this 3/4 mile long road right near my house which I will probably do this one, but what if someone turns on in front of me or gets close behind me? Do I redo completely the eight near-stops or continue where I left off when I turn back around for another pass of the road? I'm hoping the 3/4 of a mile will get me eight near stops from 60MPH but I'm not sure it's that long. I sort of doubt it. Maybe six at the most. What do I do in that instance? It would probably take me about 10 or 15 seconds to make a U-turn because there's a stop sign at the end so would my brakes be too cooled down by then in order to continue the sequence and do the last two or three stops?

Just follow the instructions on the Zeckhausen site and you'll be fine. |

Honestly, I don't think any of us know the process well enough or the physics behind it to determine how much cooling between runs would be too much. Maybe ask someone from one of the brake manufacturers? Maybe email Zeckhausen, Stoptech, Brembo, maybe Turner Motorsports? Just throwin out ideas. Maybe you should look for another spot that would work better?

Good point, Ghunger, I'm certainly no expert. Although, I don't think there are any consequences for an ineffective 1st attempt... they certainly aren't going to get worse, right?

The difference was so dramatic after I did mine the 1st time. It went from a VERY pronounced "stuck" feeling to being near perfect (what you'd expect BMW brakes to feel like). I'm thinking of doing it a 2nd time. The Zeckhausen site says the pedal will really firm up the 2nd time... which should take care of my only remaining complaint. |

The bedding process is as they say however, I have a different system where I'll do 2-4 near stops from 30 mph then 2 from 40 mph then 2 from 60 mph...etc etc. This raises the temps gradually and should result in a better even wear. This is the technique I use when bedding in porterfield race pads into my corolla, the reason for not stopping completely is that the pads are very aggressive and a complete stop would result in the pad biting into one specific area thus needing resurfacing. Good luck
