Painters tape before autocross?
Me and the wife are bringing our cars to the track for the first time this weekend. We'll be running slaloms, skidpad, emergency lane changes, and autocross. I noticed some people put the painters tape in strategic areas and others do not. Recommendations from people with track experience? is it worth putting the tape on? Or more trouble than its worth?
thanks. |

I don't do that stuff because it ruins an otherwise perfect photo-op. Besides, at autox, you will only hit cones. Cone marks can be removed easily.

Now, with track events where idiots in front of you go off..and throw gravel at your car repeatedly...THEN I would consider blue painters tape on the very bottom lower front valence. Have I ever done it before? NOPE.

Have a great time running the car! As others mentioned, no need for tape at autocross. Up to you for open track days. Run a few of them per year and you will get chips and pits in your front bumper/hood. IMO the time is better spent checking over your car mechanically, studying the track, and talking with experienced drivers.

Last year I witnessed the car in front me lose a headlight because the guy in front of him decided to take a short trip off the track, no time to react. I don't care about chips etc you'll get these no matter what on the open track but losing a headlight makes it one expensive DE day. Since then I always tape my headlights (see avatar pic)

Get clear shelving paper at Target or Walmart. It's the stuff people put on kitchen shelves. It's cheaper and thicker than painters tape. It also comes off clean if you take it off within a week or so.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Thanks again. I do have the ventureshield clearbra already. No one else had tape...i would have felt like a doorknob showing up in a lowly 335...the only one taped up. no damage or marks after hitting a few cones. I'm completely addicted now! Most fun you can have with your clothes on! AND, now I understand what understeer is...no matter how much i read about it, I just couldn't grasp it...til feeling it around corners.

I just have the front bumper painted every 3-4 years. I picked up more chips driving on the freeway than on the track anyway.

Not worth doing unless you wanna do a cool tape job.... I've been known to do that while waiting the 3 hours or so for my heat to start.

I did the tape job on my dad's M3. didn't take too long to do and it worked perfectly for a low price. If you are really concerned about chips and scratches i would recommend putting painters tape.

I used some heavy duty clear contact paper(from Staples) for my last track day .....at the end of the day the contact paper took a beating but my car did not!
Plus it didn't ruin the pictures! |
