Warning, outside temp 37 degrees, warning?

SO I get in my car, and the iDrive display says :

warning, outside temperature 37 degrees, warning.

then as I'm driving the car, it does it again.

any ideas what this means?

that's the temperature when ice may start forming on the roads, hence the warning. The snowflake warning icon tells the same.

It could mean that it's 37 degrees outside???? Sorry, couldn't resist being a smart ass on this one.

Yes it is a "potential" ice warning.

it doesn't matter if it snows.... even dew can form ice on roads, particularly on roads that bridge over running streams/rivers.... which you have plenty of in Florida. It should only chime once or twice when you first start.

If you are in an area that is 37ฐ you'll get the initial chime. Then if you drive through an area that is 38ฐ or higher and then back to an area that is 37ฐ it will chime again.

The 37ฐ is the temperature that black ice is known to begin to form. You really can't see black ice because of it's proximity to the black road surface, hence the name. As Chesmu stated, it is caused by freezing dew that fills the tiny indentations on the top of the tarmac rendering the surface smooth instead of rough.

I'm sure alot of us have seen signs on the roads stating that "Bridges freeze before roadways". Less likely but it can also occur over large culverts; anywhere the roadway has air beneath it.

My e36 does this. It's nice to see BMW has carried some BMW fundamentals forward into the new generations.
