Question How effective is anti-theft (stock)

Another modification to the 2010 models.

If anti-theft does not come with factory installation, they cannot install it anymore as an added accessory. I don't know what aftermarket options are and how they mess up the warranty.

That is perhaps one thing I am interested to know.

How good is the stock Anti-theft device for those of you whose cars are equipped with one. Can the absence of one be a deal breaker?

I will be driving in SoCal and in Downtown LA quite a bit.

Thanks again guys.

barring a flatbed, its almost impossible to steal the entire car.
I happen to have the alarm, in a major metro city like NY or LA, its really not that much of a deterrent
a smash and grab of the contents of a car is over and finished within 45 seconds. in major metro areas no one will pay attention to yet another car alarm. and even if they do, almost no one will risk their own safety for someone else's car.

i wouldnt call it a deal breaker... its a very minor deterrent to casual thieves (like locking lugs). if they want your car, they'll tow it. no one is going to even blink at a car on the back of a tow truck with the alarm going off.

Sad but true. Almost need to get one of those flamethrower alarms that someone put on an old 5er. THAT would be a good alarm LOL

Thanks guys, this makes it simpler. Should not wait longer to make a decision.

Anyone knows where to buy some stickers which say "this vehicle is equipped with anti-theft device". I can slap them on the front windows and hope someone gets scared and not try to break in. My current neighborhood has seen some glass breakage and petty thefts.

I have the OEM alarm on the 335i and had great time testing it, but I've never thought it would stop a competent thief. It makes great noise and makes the clown nose flash, but neither of that would deter even a semi-pro - the alarm is definitely not a deal breaker. The insurance companies know it and will take hardly anything off their regular rates.

No alarm will really stop a thief. It makes a little noise. Woopty do. If its a grab and go they'll do just that. If they're stealing a car, they can drag it out in literally 10 seconds if they are good and have the right equipment. Just make sure you've got good insurance and dont leave anything valuable in the car.

well it will certainly deter the amateur and wannabe thieves with all the noises it make plus it's good for people that doesn't have a garage and can alert people inside the house so you can run out with your shotgun...

Exactly the way I was looking at it. Seems like a couple of wannabe thieves around here, so I was looking at just getting a sticker or so, if they bother to check it.

Any suggestions on this fooling around, will be great.

2010s do not come with any possibility of after market noise-making toy installation. I wonder what's the deal with BMW, why they want to take small things out and make life harder for their buyers.

BMW Assist also allows them to track your car on GPS if its ever stolen. You just need a police report before you call them. If they steal stuff inside your car all they need to do is break the glass so just hide valuables or take them with you.

Anybody can purchase them. These are the cheaper models. I read an article not to long ago about the newer ones that use lasers to guide the arms and can yank a car from a spot, parallel parked between two other cars. All done in the time it takes to back up to the car.

If they want it, they'll take it. End of story.

E-brake isn't gonna do anything for the front wheels.

All things being equal, a thief will break into a non-alarmed car before an alarmed car.

The most useful parts of the system are the blinking clown nose and the alarm sticker that my insurance company sent me.
