It seems that finally people is understanding the BMW's proposal. And as soon as the car starts to be seen on the streets, it starts growing on people as well.

I agree! Once a thorough look and drive has been experienced, the value - although not cheap - is readily apparent. There is no clear cut competitor. Some may comment on its resemblance to the X6, the X6 is only available as a 4 seater annnnd if you are over 6'3 sitting in the rear is not an option - at least not comfortably. Outside the walls of BMW there are only 2 other 4 door - luxury hatches (state side) the Aston Martin Rapide and the Porsche Panamera. Although they are not "True" competitors, in as far as the GT vs. Aston and Porsche, they all share the luxury 5 door concept, albeit the latter 2 are more sport oriented.

What's the price range of the panamera and Aston in US? Because in Europe they are in a different range when comparing with the GT. In the same range I think there's only the A5 Sportbak (although a little cheaper)

Porsche Panamera 3.6 (6cyl) starts at $74,900.00 USD
Porsche Panamera S 4.8 (8cyl) starts at $89,000.00 USD
Porsche Panamera 4S AWD 4.8 (8cyl) starts at $93,000.00 USD
Porsche Panamera Turbo 4.8 (8cyl) starts at $132,000.00 USD
Aston Martin Rapide 6.0 (12cyl) starts at $195,000.00 USD

So theorectically a GT can be crossed shopped against a Panamera 6cyl up to a base/"lightly" optioned Panamera 8cyl - 4S here in the US.

Yes, in fact this is pretty much aligned with the European reality (at least in Switzerland). I was thinking on the 530d GT prices but if one takes the 550i prices they are almost the same as the new panamera 6cyl. And I think this is the fair comparative. And the BMW has better spec

I've seen a lot of posts saying they don't understand the purpose of the GT which puzzles me a bit. I have a GT on order and currently drive a Range Rover full size. My next car needed to handle/perform better than a Range Rover, have a high standard of luxury but also be able to fit a cycle in the trunk. I looked at and test drove a whole range of cars and the GT came out as the best/most suitable of the bunch.

I drove the Panamera V8 and V6 - I liked the V8 but the V6 felt underpowered (and slower than the GT). Even though it comes in all-wheel drive, I wasn't convinced the V8would be practical in bad weather.

The new Mercedes E350 wagon is nice but not outstanding. The BMW wagons are too slow. Audi is from 2011 only offering the Q7 in a small engine with lesser performance. I test drove an X6 hybrid which was fun but limited in space and the ride choppy. I used to have an X5 but the interior is not as refined as the GT or 7 series.

I ended up deciding between a 750ix and the 550GTix - and it was also details like the panorama sunroof not offered on a 750 (and price difference) that ultimately landed the GT.

You thoroughly understand the purpose/role of the GT

I suspect with time more people and/or potential US buyers will grow to appreciate the merits of the GT. If not ohh well. The thing that gets me is that people don't realize that option for option the GT is actually a 7 Series.
There are options on the GT that are not available on the F10 5 series although they share the same series designation. The wheel base, overall length, interior space, etc are all 7series specs. In essence its a 7 series (750i) with a hatch, at a lower price point than the 7.

No other car in the enitre BMW lineup, with the exception of the 750li offers more interior space period. Overall cargo space goes to the x5 but not by much.

I for one say there is nothing wrong with a big BMW as long as it performs like a BMW should and the GT does so. I may get an e92 M3 coupe in addition to my GT some time in the future, I like what that car has to offer as well. There is a product for everyone within BMW's product line, its great to have choices, and BMW understands that "one size" doesn't necessarily fit all.

Fortunately, or unfortunately in my case, in the USA, the Panoramic sunroof is standard, not an option like it is in most of the rest of the world. I'd rather have the increased headroom and lower center of gravity for the approximate $2K it costs (at least in Germany where it is 1400 Euros plus 300 more in taxes as an option). I'd rather spend that money on other, more functional options.
