335i vs wrx-sti

I was on the freeway last night just cruising at about 75 when a STI pulled up next to me....then a little ahead of me then a little behind me as if he was checking out the badge. Anyways, he started revving his engine and I honked and he honked back........I slowed down to about 60 and he did as well and then I honked three times and we both punched it on the third. I have AT e90, we went from about 60-110 before slowing down and I was about three car lengths ahead..........Do ya think he was surprised?

Let me be the first to say, that was very irresponsible of you to race on a public street, now since that is out of the way.

GOOD JOB , he must have sh|t his pants not knowing what hit him I must say I am surprised as well, I would definately think that sti would give 335 run for its money

I bet his car sounded louder tough, no?

I agree to a point........but we were on a almost empty freeway with two lanes between us and the next car and no one in front of us.

I don't know a whole lost about STI's other than that they are 300hp and a little lighter then my e90. Oh.....and I forgot to mention I didn't go over 6000 RPM.......I'm still in the break in period.....even though I'm doing a "hard" break-in. I only have 300 miles on it so far. For all I know that guy was a crappy driver.... whereas my AT does all the work for me.I'm just reporting what happened.

Well played.

Two things:

1) From a dig he might've had you with the AWD. Maybe. Since 335 AT owners are reporting 4.8-ish 0-60 times that may not be true. From a 60 mph roll you had the advantage due to lower driveline loss compared to the AWD STi (yes, even with your auto).

2) If he was stock (big IF with any STi) then you had the hp/tq advantage.

At any rate, nice kill. Never do that again.

STI @ high speed = teh suck.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. But seriously, afaik they cut back their boost big time at high RPM/speed situations. The little engine isn't very good in the triple digits as they tend to lose grunt. Nice job and nice kill.

I want to add that STI has quiker launch due to AWD, so the 1/4 mil times are similar. But from 60 and up traction is not needed, but awd hurts the performance

I'm thinking since all the passing power test I've seen of 335i vs e46 M3....I think it's the 6th geat 50-90 or whatever that the 335i was considerably faster is this area. Maybe it's the same for the 335i vs sti?

It was definately the STI, had the badge on back with the high spoiler it was black exterior with a red STI badge. And it had a single huge pipe sticking out the back probably at least 3 inch diameter.

Lol, those annoy me. At least it was a real import/tuner and not a ricer.

Interesting.

BTW, it was about 20 degrees at night in Salt Lake City at about 4000 feet.

From Car and Driver:

that hurtles the 335i forward. Top-gear acceleration from 30 to 50 mph of 6.5 seconds lops 3.5 seconds off the 330i’s time and is 3.2 seconds quicker than the M3’s performance. Moving from 50 to 70 mph takes just 6.0 seconds, 3.4 seconds quicker than the 330i could do and nearly a second and a half quicker than the M3’s time. The 3-series now has the kind of torque that makes guys with 4.9-liter Mustangs act cocky. (And you thought 3-series owners were already a swaggering lot.)

Not sure how relevant this is.........but this is what I was referencing earlier.

Cool
I just pointed it out since turbos run better in colder air
that STI on the above website ran at lower F vs 335i
and the one that ran at the same temp was slower than 335i
Also, different drivers

Thats true, but the day an M3 races someone without downshifting is a day after they should have sold the car. Neither of you (STI or 335i) neglected to downshift, did you?

Let me also say, that was very irresponsible of you to race on a public street, now since that is out of the way.

The STI would have a much faster launch from a stand still (believe me I owned one), but the huge drive line loss on the STI would really affect a rolling start. And you guys are right, the STI still has power at high speeds, but not as much as the 335i. I still think 3 car lengths is a little too much IMO.

In my mind it seems that you might shave a few tenths starting from 60mph over a m3 because of what that article states...............but as I get older I've learned that the more I'm confident about being wrong the more successful I become.

I guess in a m3 you would be in second gear at 60, and gun it and make a quick shift to third which would get you past 110 I think. Your probably right....but it still seems like it might shave just a little bit off since I was in third the whole time whereas if you were in third in a m3 at 60 it might take a couple tenths before it started pulling hard?

Its all good either way. I would have got a new m3 is they had an auto, I'm to lazy to shift and I like that I can get big gains cheaply with the 335i.
