Check Oil avail @ 160' F
Ok, took a drive and was constantly hitting my check oil until it was available. From a cold start my check oil function was available at about 160'F in my 335i (e90).
For those of you (w/o temp guage) that wait till this is available before revving hard, I would wait a little longer. |

Very valuable information that, thanks. Does anyone know what a good oil temp should be before taking the engine to the redline? And does the 325i and 330i make the oil checker available at 160F?

np. "normal" operating temp in 335i is up above 210'F (needle straight up on the guage).
It's worth noting I was driving like an old lady until the temperature got up. Also, it was a bit chilly outside. so, take this observation for what it's worth. If your driving more aggressively right out of the drive way, I'm sure the check oil function will be available sooner (but the engine temp would rise faster as well). |

But lately, with VERY cold weather in the mornings, the oil level shows up within about a minute after starting the car in the morning. Clearly, the car is not warmed up yet, so it must do something different when reading the oil temp in very cold weather. In not-so-cold weather, it's still the usual 5-10 minute wait until the level shows up. Driving around for 10 minutes or so should be just fine in any case.
