Glove Box Question

Does anyone know what the small "receptacle" is on the left hand, inside of the glovebox door is ?

Not the flashlight or its' receptacle, but it looks like a small item is meant to be secured there.

I think you might be talking about the position where the valet key goes

If you have that small plastic casing (handly pointed out by nmulax) then you should also have been given a flat-ish black plastic key. If you lose/damage your actual fob then you can open the door and glovebox with the plastic key (hence it's not a valet key) and then you take out that plastic holder, put the plastic key in it and you can then use this in the fob slot and start the car.

as an aside if you want a valet key you press the switch in the glove box to lock the trunk and then lock the glove box with the key and then give the valet the fob without the key taken out of it. Then he can open the doors to the car, drive the car, but can't get into the glove box or trunk.

I think you meant "with the key taken out" or "without the key in it"

what's the rationale for not including an emergency key?

Apparently so. i don't know why they would stop equiping cars with this feature but there must have been some reason.

You have it 99 ½% correct...you give the valet the fob with the key taken out. If you've handed over the fob without taking the key out, the valet now has the metal key and is able to open both the glovebox and the trunk regardless of the setting of the locking switch. I have the metal key attached to the keyring so it is a simple matter of pulling it from the fob and handing the fob over. Only problem with that is grease gets all over my pocket.

Oh, on a side note, if you lock your trunk, lock the glovebox, and give the valet the FOB without the key but you have the cold weather package, access is still available to the trunk. The release levers for the seats can be pulled and the trunk is completely open. I learned this sort of the hard way.

I think I'd rather have the emergency key than the rechargeable flashlight/torch.

Do you really have to put the plastice key into the fob to start the car?

Hmmm, I don't think we've been using the term "fob" correctly throughout this forum and not just this thread. What we've been calling the fob is really the key to operate the car. But I have no substitute term for us to use that discerns the boxy key from the metal key.

Interesting take on bmw. BMW assit is free 1st yr. If i do not wish to pay for bmw assist after first year, then I am screwed if I lock all my keys/fobs in the car? Or did I miss something with the 07 models?
