Extreme amount of Brake Dust

Hey Guys I always see people upgrade their rims to some nice chrome rims or etc.
I want to upgrade my rims sooner or later but the brake dust gets my OEM rims dirty in couple of days.
so I've basically gave up hope always cleaning my rims.

Anyway to fix this?

That won't keep them from looking dirty, it'll just make it easier to clean them next time. There isn much you can do to eliminate the brake dust, if you want a clean car, it takes time.

I think there are aftermarket pads that dust less than the OEMs, but don't know any off hand. Try searching for brake pads.

Garage List
if u wax them and the wheels are a polished finish the brake dust rolls right off, simply use soap and water there fine...oems are harder to keep clean.

There is little that can be done - the OEM brake pads stop the car quite well but generate dust. Many people use Wheel Wax on the rims, which does not stop the dust forming but makes the wheel cleaning easier.

I have used Rotex Gold and Posi Quiet, and both have performed very well. The feel is very much like oem, and hardly any dust at all. I would say a reduction of about 95% dust accumulation. The Kevlar/ceramic pad material generates a lighter dust vs black dust from the oem.

Once you get your wheels as clean as they can get, grab a pair of "No More Dust" wheel cleaner. Works very very well; spray it on and wash off the dust with minimal scrubbing.

Though do look into it before you put it on your rims; I have heard bad stories about aluminum rims turning white with this stuff. I haven't seen any issues on the cars that I've used it on, though.

You have several options.

There are 2 products that I know can help.

Armorall Wheel protectant and poorboys sealant.

You should also look into cleaning the wheels thoroughly inside and out, and applying some sort of sealant/wax Preferably multiple coats to help aid in keep it easier to clean.

Poorboys wheel sealant seems to be popular, I personally just used blackfire wet diamond sealant and opti-seal. Both can be found at www.detailedimage.com and they offer 10% off to e90post.

Your last option is to change the pads to "dustless" pads... which I never recommend because I havnt tried it personally.

Wheel covers are not recommended because it limits the air flow to the brake rotor/caliper/pad which inturn will cause them to heat up faster, fade faster, and stop slower.

Last but not least, downshift, downshift, downshift.... I do as much downshifting as I can to slow down before I need to use the brakes, be smart, dont late brake.

I have a friend that constantly waits for the last inch before he starts to brake, im like "DUDE, why dont you start slowing down earlier and/or downshift" He always comes back with either "im not braking late" or "i thought they were going to speed up" then he wonders why he has crazy brake dust... kids.

Without changing your pads, seal your wheels with something like OPT OptiSeal or PB Wheel Sealant (or both). This will help reduce how much brake dust builds up, and make the wheels significantly easier to clean.

P21S Wheel Gel is some of the best (and safest) stuff out there for cleaning wheels. Consider grabbing some. Sonax's wheel cleaning products are also very good.

Chrome rims are the biggest pain to keep clean. You have to clean them by hand every week, with a microfiber cloth and get out every single spec of dust that is on them. If you don't they will start to look dull and have these little imperfections on them. I will never buy chrome rims again. I had 22's with a bunch of spokes..It was a nightmare.

No. Brake dust is inevitable. Products to be used against it just slow the process down.

But you can stop applying so much pressure to your brakes so it doesn't show up as quickly A wash once a week should suffice.

Thanks for your advice on the how to keep your rims clean but what you mentioned above makes little sense. Yes, it may keep your rims a little cleaner but is that worth the cost of a new clutch?!?

Downshifting should be avoided to prevent unnecessary wear of the clutch and should only be used when continuous braking is necessary and the brakes would run hot otherwise (decending a hill).

Clutch wear should be negligible if you properly rev match though.

well you can change your pads but the oem one have beautiful stoping power. If you use other pads it wont have that bmw brake feel. In other words you can sacrifice the oem feel for the look or go withe looks instead.
