Good idea to skip first year?

My car will be paid off in a couple months time so I'm in great position to buy the new 3 series. What do you guys think of buying the first year model of a new platform? Anyone remember if the first year e46 had more problems/kinks than later years?

I'm with jl215. The few first generation problems you may have here and there are worth not having to wait another year for the car.

I have learned that you should wait for the 2nd year models, because there are normally some isues with the first year batch. Plus, they are going to change model numbers and engines (335i-turbo)

personally, i would wait until at least the second year. i didn't really have much of a choice, since i needed a car right away (old e34's tranny went, and it was time to let her go). so far i've been happy though with no problems (picked up on 1/7/06).

Hey, I got my Ford Exploder the first year it had a "new" V8, and I'm still waiting for it to explode almost 10 years later.

I dunno. I'd probably wait around to see how much the 335i is going to cost.

If all the rumors are true (328 replacing 325 and 335 replacing 330) then it's probably not a good idea to purchase a car that is going to be out of production in a few months.

Personally I'm going to be kind of upset with BMW if they pull the shaft on thousands of people who purchased the 325 and 330. Why? #1) The car is out of production in less than 1 year and #2) I could have a better and faster car for the same amount of money.

If you really don't care about these issues, go ahead and purchase a vehicle from the current production line. Either way, I'm sure you will enjoy the car.

I've had much fewer issues with my early 1st year production 325, than my late second year production Z4.

buy the car when you need it, don't worry about 1st year issues

In Fords it's not the ENGINE that explodes - though certain other critical parts may do so. Let's put it this way - don't buy a Ford unless you are absolutely certain you that you will never be rear-ended.

Why do I drive my Familymobile? In large part, because I have a family to protect.

I would definitely wait for at least the second year model. I'm regretting that I didn't. There's a lot of bugs that need to be fixed which, while they are more or less insignificant, probably won't exist in the later models.

Another thread full of BS. A brand new model car that one would wait, is the one you are not really that crazy about and the one you couldn't afford.

No problems.

I bougght a first year production E36 320i and took delivery of one of the first e46 323i to arrive in Australia November 1998. I took delivery of one of the first 325 E90s to arrive in Australia.

No dramas just loads of smiles and a great "feel good" feeling each and every time I drive my e90.

If your finances are such that you would rather wait, so be it but if you want into an e90 now, go for it. Forget about the negative. There are only a few cars with serious issues, less with moderate ones and even less with minor issues. The vast majority of e90s are top notch, perfect. The first year problem plague is a myth. There are going to be issues with a small number of cars during any production time of any brand and any model of car. They are a complex machine with tens of thousands of parts.

Enjoy the car NOW and later. If you are a true BMW fan, you will go get one NOW!

All the best with your final decision.
