A really dumb question

i know a lot about BMWs, i know the difference between all the models and stuff (especially 3 series). i know how much horsepower each has and all sorts of random stuff, but i dont know where you are getting this whole E90, E92, etc. stuff from. i know it must be just a model recognition, but i dont know much about it. did BMW come up with it? or is it just a common term?

Can someone just please explain? sorry for being so dumb

it's an internal designation

google BMW E codes,

each redesign gets a new code.

It's a BMW thing.

"E" stands for Entwicklung, German for development or evolution

This is from Wikipedia:

Internally, BMW associates an "e-code" for each generation of a series ("E" stands for Entwicklung, German for development or evolution). These "chassis codes" only change to signify a major redesign of a series, or the introduction of a new series. BMW AG reported in September 2006 that BMW will switch to the letter "F" for their future models, beginning with the F01 7 Series replacement.
