The wisdom of trading my '06 330 for an '07 335

So...I consider myself a fairly level-headed, conscientious person who typically keeps a car 5-6 years. However, this quick abandonment of the 330 engine for the (much) more powerful 335 has really set me off. Like many of you, I certainly would have waited the 16 months (I purchased the first 330i here in Little Rock, a 6-speed manual, sports pkg model). The power of my current 330i is really the only thing that has not fully met my expectations for a $40K plus car.

I'm considering at least investigating selling my '06 330i with 19,000 miles and getting a 335 similarly equipped with a 6-speed manual, sports package, etc. Am I crazy? Will I take a bath? I currenly owe about $19K.

You will take a bath on such a deal.

I too was (am still) upset at the engine replacement. I could have waited easily.

However, accept the 06 E90 for what it is... a great car. We will see this again when BMW releases the M3 and a ZHP 335i in a few years.

That said, I for one will never buy another new model BMW for at least 24 months into its cycle.

P.S. I am writing this as I am browsing BMW's 2007 X5 build-it site. Just got the wife's okay on a replacement for the van.

the E90s keep their value pretty well so you might not be screwed like you think. you won't know until you work the numbers. you might as well go for it and see if it works out. keep us all up to date!

Oh....and I need new tires, so I guess I'd be $1,200 better off!!

I know where you are coming from. I think the best bet is to talk to the sales person who sold the car to you. He/she will most likely give you a good deal since you are a returning customer. Good luck.

Look, you've used the car for a year and a half, 19,000 miles, so you've got to pay something for that.

If you feel the deprish is worth it and that you may actually KEEP the 335i for 5-6 yeras like you normally do, why not? You'll have time to catch up on your loss during those years and you'll enjoy the heck out of your 335i. And please....post pics when you get it!!!

edit: If you get along well with your salesman, run the numbers with him. Your mileage is low, probably he'll be as honest as he can about it and you may end up with the car you want.

It might be better to wait through the teething problems if there are any for the new engine.

And the pricing will be more agressive for the 335 the longer you wait, and the 330 has already taken the largest hit already.... so it makes it to your advantage to wait a little longer.

Unless you can get a good deal out of the 330 trade of course.

You will take a bath. I'm in this too - and it took a while to get over it. I bought my car when I had to, so don't feel as bad for not waiting, but it still sucks to not have 'the best' E90 available, when I planned on keeping it for the long haul.

It doesn't make sense financially. You already know this, so don't try to convince yourself otherwise with fancy math. However, if you have the resources and it means that much to you, then go for it. It's only money...

Your best bet will be to do a used for used trade when 335 owners trade up to an M3.

Exactly...I'd been thinking that the shortest bridge across that depreciation canal would be just to wait 12 months and trade my "used" '06 300i for a "used" '07 335i. With respect to obtaining the 335, that's probably the most financially sound route....

...as long as you can live with the fact that someone else broke it in and you have to deal with the long term consequences... Not that I have labored over this same issue, over and over...

That's what u think! maybe after 3rd year?
I traded my 06 for 07 335i Sedan.
I took a $12,000 loss in 16 months owning my loaded 330i.
Every dealer I went to would not do better in fact way worse!
Thing is I'm now over it & have what I really want. I feel was worth it!
There are like 14 things besides engine that are now better than my 330i.

Way I see it "Life is Way To Short" you can afford it go for it.
If you can't or expect others to buy it for you then "NO WAY"

Go for it. My brother-in-law bought an 05 Vette and 13 months later got a Z06. He does not regret it, even with the depreciation hit, I doubt you will either.

I'm very surprised if you can get more than $31k for dealer trade-in. Mine has ZPP and Step and I wish someone can take it for $32k.

Sounds like you were upside down. I may be in for a rude awakening, but I don't think I am. I've had it for 20 months with a fairly high payment that I suspect will just about equal the depreciation. Again, worst case I wait a few months for my principle to go down, or I wait 12 montha for a used 335.
