Daytime Running Lights?

Is it the law in the US or PA or anywhere, to have DRL on?
I really don't like having them on while I am driving, and wanted to know if I can turn them off, and how to go about doing it? (I have i-Drive).

Its the law in Canada...definately not anywhere in the US, though.

Is DRL only on the 325i?

Because I don't have DRL on my 330i.

Me neither, I just keep it on adaptive (far left).

I think DRLs should be mandatory everywhere. I am so used to looking for lights in my rear view it's kind of a problem for me when people don't have them.

I'll be sure to turn mine on when I'm in Quebec.

No! Don't worry, saury. There's no DRL law here yet, and to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure we'll see one anytime soon. Pennsylvania isn't exactly the most--shall we say "progressive"--state in the union (I mean, for crying out loud, there's a 1000 ft. deep coal mining pit in my backyard that's been abandoned for the last 60 years, and it looks like another 60 years before they fill it in )

I guess my big question is, you have daytime running lights on your 325i??? Unless I'm mistaken, I thought DRLs for 325 and 330 were supposed to be part of September computer update. Do a search here on the forum because this topic has been adressed before, I'm just not sure what came of it. I know for a fact I don't have DRLs on my 325i, and there's nothing on the iDrive screen about it. I think it may be a dealer preset...

Anyone else know???

DRL are on both 325 + 330, I have them on my 330i.
Dealer has to set them, you cannot turn them on or off.

Who doesn't want those sexy angel eyes to be on?

They're eccentuated further during the daytime - at night with the headlamps on, they're less conpicuous.

Angel eyes aren't the DRLs...the extra halogens are (even with xenons).

Here in California DRL is not mandatory, but we are now required to turn the lights on when it's raining enough for wipers and/or other reduced visibility times.

Personally, I prefer DRL because I'm convinced it does help others see me.

You got that right! I can't tell you how many close calls I've had when people refuse to turn their headlights on in the fog, or on a rainy day. It's not the idea of seeing better...it's being seen that counts.

Here in PA, we have a new law that says you must turn on headlights in any construction zone. I still can't figure out the logic behind this one, unless it's like a classical conditioning kind of thing like with Dr. Pavlov...you know, turning on headlights makes you slow down I don't know.

My 330 doesnt have the DRL and there is no option in the iDrive menus. I hope it will be a vehicle setting i can set on the fly, cause on my old 745 the DRL took away from the angel eyes. When you put the car in parking lights mode the DRL's still stayed on. I like the idea of being able to have the motor running on no lights projecting out.

To clear up some confusion...I dont have a setting in my iDrive to turn them on and off...the car came like this (with DRL on). I just keep my lights set to adaptive all the time, and of course I turn them on in the rain/fog.....now turning them on in construction zones might seem a bit harder to remember to do though.... wtf is up with that?
But since I dont have the xenon package (no angel eyes for meeeeee) I think sometimes it just doesnt look right...

Do you have iDrive? I know for a fact DRLs are not a changable option in the iDrive menus, but the Central Locking can be controlled through iDrive. The dealer asks you if you want all doors to lock after you reach 5 m.p.h., but you can easily change it at anytime via iDrive. At iMenu: Vehicle settings>central locking>lock all doors after 5 m.p.h.

I'm confused. I always thought the "angel eyes" were the daytime running lights. It sounds like from this thread that they are not and some other light assembly are the daytime running lights. Under what conditions are the "angel eyes" on?

If you have the xenon package, when you turn the light control knob one click to the right, only parking lights (angel eyes) come on (one click to the left turns on adaptive headlights). Turn the knob two clicks to the right, headlights turn on (two outer most xenons come on, inner halogen lights are off, but angel eyes are on). Turn high beams on, all lights--outer xenon and inner halogens are on--with angel eyes.

Daytime running lights are these inner halogen lights (closest to the grill).

Thanks.....I've been wondering what the second light was for, and I originally thought it was use to flash people only.......

No DRL for me.
