Paint swirl and scratch remover products?

What abrasive pads should I purchase to remove paint scratches? And what compound should I use. I'm not ready to by a PC machine. I want to try polishing out some scratches by hand with a compound. Can anyone make recommendations? I've been on Detailer Domains website, and there are too many products. It is somewhat confusing.
