N55 -- Anybody Drive One Yet?

Cause i just did

2011 335i Black on Black -- just dropped off yesterday ---

my current ride is a E92 335 and Ive hade since 12/09, I really like the car .. its been a real pleasure, when it comes to performance. so I have little or no quams with the car.

I was leaving for lunch a friend of mine said -- bet i can make your day!! i took him up on it -- he pointed to a black/black car in the drive -- and said the keys were in his box.. i checked the sticker -- 2011 335 blah,blah,blah....
hmm .. he shouted -- you may not want to do that!! .. whatever that meant --

so i light it up, and DAYUM!! i was sure that with a single turbo, there would be a compromise in exhaust sound -- not so -- very healthy !! As i left, he said "be sure to get on it a bit" ... all of his cryptic communications were getting ridiculous!!

Let me say this -- ive never seen BMW trim performance on an existing line, (excluding 1999-2000 328i) so i love my TT and was sure this would be its equal -- but no greater.. Wrong!!

first thing youll note is the spool up lag is gone, our current cars require a little bit of time to "spin up" and take off.. ladies and gentlemen ... those days are over.. if you put this thing in DS and hit the gas -- make sure you have NO traffic in front of you.. it pulls out of the hole like a small block ford or chevy... and being in town, i couldnt see the limits of the engines capabilities, but nothing suffered in the change -- once you hit 2nd it feels like you kicked in an afterburner, you get pushed deeper into the drivers seat as the light poles turn into picket fences -- throttle response is immediate, and aggressive. this is not the picture that some people had, loosing one turbo -- same horsepower rating, an so on...

put it this way.. ive driven the PPK/PPE demo car, and this new incarnation is faster -- I would have no problem trading in my 2009 for this baby -- based on sheer performance.. i got back to work.. threw the keys at my friend and yelled "I hate you!!"" -- he laughed... and said -- "its only a signature away"

how do i con the wife?
p.s. I like to little PSST from the blow off valve -- kinda ricey, but nice

This is good news.
I'm extremely interested with what tuning options come out with the N55.

Thanks for the insight. I really hope the tuners can make this car work. Downpipes (er, pipe) should be cheaper

I'm not thrill by the fact that the N55 boosts higher to achieve the same HP as the N54.

I wonder if they are still using the 1 piece manifold/turbine housing design.

I dunno about this review or what to believe
You claim less lag while more power than N54 but this other person offers a completely opposite opinion!

This OP has entirely a different review of the N55
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=372175

Which is the correct assessment of the N55??? I guess I have to test it out one day for myself!

got no choice, I couldn't find any 2010 leftover E92 with option I like. So got to go with 2011, hopefully the N55 would be as tuneable as N54.

Is the OP's car and the 2011 both AT? Cause our AT transmissions adjust to each owners driving style. So after a while the pedal will become less responsive if the car is not driven aggressively, and this is what some people see as "lag", when in actuallity it is not. OP if you are auto, you should reset your transmission if your car feels sluggish off the line, drive it more aggressivley so your car can learn this driving style.

Op would have to be blind to not know it was a 335is... That would be like mistaking an m-sport for an m3

this was a 2011 335 E92 6AT --
with 27mi on the clock ... straight off the truck and freshly PDI'd !!

I drive a 2009 E92 6MT -- not tuned and no slouch..

the car i drove was a TWIN TURBO POWER car -- i did check under the hood before i left on my drive.. i left the car is DS so my shifts would be a little tighter .. couldnt ring it out .. cuz its still new .. and surely not mine -- so i had to respect that

the other poster drove a sedan? possible difference..

-- now i'm not trying to "throw the baby out with the bath water" by any means.. i still love my car -- but the *readily* apparent throttle response is what impressed me..

and it was clear when i got in my car to go to lunch -- mine still has that nice on-boost feel to it -- just takes a lil longer for it to give me the "full effect"

but like i said, ive driven the 2010 E92 6AT Power Kit/Performance Exhaust car also, and i believe (butt dyno only) the 2011 pulls harder and a lot smoother-- torque delivery is almost instantaeous .. coming back i made a quick corner - at low speed, and gave it a tiny bit of gas and could hear the rear tires chirping ever so slightly --

i drive cars, test performance, evaluate repairs for a living -- i just posted my impressions, since i had a chance to drive the car (unexpectedly) i was probably the second person to do so. there will be plenty of other people who will give their feedback on this platform - maybe there will be one at a dealer close by -- if you have a chance check one out, and let us know what you think --

im a jaded N54 driver - but i had to give props where props were due ...

Wow, very interesting review. You now have me second guessing looking elsewhere for for my next car. I think I'm just going to have to drive one for myself and see.

their past tradition hold true in 2011 -- this car is under-rated for sure...

keeping it under the insurance radar, and spanking the competition in the process ...

this is one to watch -

I drove one and was not impressed. Don't know what your feelin. I thought it was laggy and did not have the spirited feel of the N54. It was not any faster or slower, but I did not like the feel. If you are someone who comes in to drive one for the first time, you will not notice a difference. If you know the N54, you will notice the N55 drives differently.
