HPFP what is the process
Has anyone ever simply noticed that their car is not running right, and had it replaced? Of is the FC or SES lamp a must? Just curious (don't ask me why).....

Nope, usually you have to pop a code saying that your HPFP is going, or they wont replace it.

Won't happen. Typically, the flow is as follows:
1. Rough idle at cold start 2. Service Engine Soon (or Engine Malfunction)/Reduced Power CEL Without the car throwing a code which is replicable by the dealer, the HPFP will not be replaced. This is according to my SA. FYI, even it throws a code, they must install the new software update, clear codes, attempt to replicate the issue. If no code is found, the car is deemed as fixed and no further work order will be issued.

The first time I had mine replaced, I actually had the car in for something else, and had noticed a long crank and fluctuating RPM's the morning of my appointment, so I mentioned that to my SA when I brought the car in. No codes, no limp, nothing (of course I can't say if there were invisible codes, but the SA didn't mention them). He said they did a pressure test on the pump and it failed, so they replaced it. I probably just got lucky. The second time I had my pump replaced, I had to wait for the codes even though I knew it was coming.

In the UK, I just had mine replaced under warranty at 56k, and had no symptoms at all, other than the oxygen sensors either side of the Cat, said it was running too lean. That lead my dealer to replace not only the pump (to the new 934 one) but also all of the injectors also.
But as I say, no long cranks, perfect start and idle, hot or cold. |

or you can be "lucky" like me and have the fuel pump literally die without any warning whatsoever and leave you stranded in the middle of the road!
My advise: have BMW Road Side Assistance phone number added to your phone and also make sure that the BMW assist button works on your car! That way you ONLY wait between 2-3 hours for the tow truck! |

On my 3rd HPFP as of now. Both times, noticed long cranks at start (2-3 seconds). No warning lamps or anything. Simply told the dealership of my issue and they replaced it both times without question.
