DIY - Removing / Replace Roundel (roundel removal)

One easy way to improve the apperance of your BMW is to replace a worn or faded Roundel. In this tech article we will discuss replacement of the roundel, and should take less than 10 minutes to perform. What you will need is a new Roundel and two plastic grommets, (available from Pelican) - shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.

The first step is to remove the existing Roundel. As you can see in Figure 3, the existing Roundel is worn and fading. The method of removal varies, but the end result is the same, you must gently pry the old Roundel off. In this case we simply used a credit card as a fulcrum point, then inserted a flat-head screwdriver between the Roundel and the hood. Remember to use caution when prying off the old Roundel. Go slowly and using light force, and it should come right off. (Figure 4)

Step two is to remove the two grommets left behind sitting in the hood as shown in Figure 5. If your grommets came off with the Roundel, you can skip this step. Simply remove them with a pair of pliers, they should pop right out. This is also a good time to clean the base for the Roundel, for as you can see it is covered with dirt.

Next, simply push the new grommets onto the new Roundel as seen in Figure 6. You may have to use a little force to get them on there, but use caution as it is possible to break the studs they slide on.

Finally, simply line up the studs with the corresponding holes in the hood, and press down with the palm of your hand, til the Roundel goes no futher (Figure 7). That's it, you're done!

yeah... with a new roundel....

not only will you have two holes, but you'll also have a circular divot in the trunk lid where the roundel fits. Put on a new one .....

see this thread:http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...lacing+roundel

I tried this on a E92 coupe and I don't know if I simply didn't apply enough elbow grease or what, but the roundels seemed like they did not want to budge at all and I was worried about damaging them. What am I doing wrong? Has anyone done this on an E92 coupe?

careful... check out Picus's thread on "problem with e92 roundels". In summary, the replacements might not fit correctly on the coupe

The front was a breeze for me, the rear was a huge pain in the ass. Of course there are no replacements for it yet either. A 72mm one might work, but it won't fit perfectly.

There are clips on the steering wheel emblem. Just don't plan on reusing your existing roundel. I replaced mine with a new one that was black/white.

Like any other item you attempt to remove, don't force anything and take your time. If you use a screwdriver, see where the plastic is pulling up, and redirect your prying using those spots as fulcrum points.

A friend at the dealership offered me a great suggestion. When I went in to get a new roundel, he asked if I would like to borrow their high-tech tool to remove the old roundel. j/k

He went in the back and cut a piece of nylon strapping that they use to band pallets. It worked great because it was thin enough to get behind the roundel and strong enough not to break.
