wheel lock nut position

Silly question but I thought I would ask anyway. Does it matter which position the lock nut is in? The reason why I ask is inexplicably my winter wheels could not fit my lock nuts, which is fine so I just used a normal nut. So I just switched back to my summers and while putting on the lock nut I never thought about which position it needed to be in. I am guessing it is all the same but just wanted to check. Thanks in advance.

Always insert wheel locks at the 6th lug nut hole counting counter clockwise from the starting point. If it doesn't fit there, then any hole will do.

+1, this is what I do, too. I've consulted the Bentley Manual, and the book confirms the statement above.

I count clockwise on the right side of the car but counterclockwise on the left side.

^^^
Last time I've tried that the car wanted to go forward on the left side and backwards on the right side and it wouldn't move.

OP, to answer the question, if you have a choice, put the locking bolt opposite the valve stem. It really shouldn't make that much of a difference unless the locking bolt is considerable heavier or lighter than the others. I eliminated the issue by putting five identical locks on each wheel.
