Defogger doesn't work-suggestions?

I know the Florida weather conditions don't help but it seems like my defogger doesn't work at all. I hit the defogger button and it goes on super high blast and it either does absolutely nothing or clears a very small section and I can leave it on for like 10 minutes and nothing happens. Sometimes I try putting the a/c on but that doesn't help.
My friend had an E46 and when he used his defogger it like blew away the fog instantaneously.

What temp are you using? Cold or hot? Try switching.

PS. Why are the windows so fogged in the first place?

hit the "auto", and it cools/warms to whichever temperature (indicated on the display) you set it at

and that usually does the trick for me to clear the fog, I've never had to hit the defogger thus far

Make sure the AC compressor is on too- no matter what temp you are setting the air...

Mine is always on 60 and then I hit the defogger and it sets the fan up to like max and then sometimes I hit the a/c if it doesn't work but that doesn't do anything. I guess I'll try the auto function and maybe a higher temperature.

Move back north; the results are mindboggling.

Make sure you're not using recycled air. The defroster won't work efficiently unless you're pulling outside air.

may sound silly, but after you've hit the defogger and it's turned the fans up to max have you stuck your hand over the dash to make sure there is air being blown onto the windscreen? It could be a blocked vent.

Yeah I don't use the recycled air.

I try opening my windows also unless it is raining.

First time I hit the defogger button I discovered that it was blowing cold air, so I adjusted the temp to 70 and moved the heat dial (whatever it's called) towards the hot setting and that did the trick... windows cleared fairly quickly. Granted it hasn't been super cold down here but I'd say no more than 5 mins later and the whole thing was cleared up.

After that I turn it off and re-adjust to a cooler temp for the A/C. If there's some "auto" feature that detects the temp and knows when to turn it hot I'd like to hear about it...

BTW I use recycled air... wouldn't pulling the cold air from outside take longer?

Hmm that seems logical, I will give this a shot.

Also, you can get some window Anti-fog solution. It works wonders.

recycled air will likely have lower humidity but I would guess if there is a problem in FL, use a warmer setting; cooler air will only aid in condensation.

Here's a question on a related note: my side-view mirrors were slightly wet / fogged up, and usually I'd wipe them down but on 2 different days I neglected to do so... or I was planning to do so after I had already hit the defogger button to clear the windshield... well, before I could get to it, I noticed that the side-view mirrors had cleared up.

So is there some heating function that I'm not aware of? I thought that was a CW pkg thing (I don't have that). Or maybe this was just a coincidence and they just cleared up on their own somehow heh...

Not really... the idea is to lower the dewpoint in the car so that the temp at the window surfaces is above the dewpoint.. That means you have to "pump" some of that moisture out of the cabin, else you just slosh the moisure vapour around and around.. The way to make the pumping effective is to use air with a lower relative humidity than is in the car.. to do that, you want to cool the inbound outside air with the A/C coil so that it drops out it's moisture (look under your car after you've been running the A/C.. that's the story there).. then you reheat the same air with the heater coil that has passed the cooling coil and voila.. it will have a lower relative humidity than it had at the same temperature on the other side... then you pump it overboard when it absorbs the extra moisture.. that would be the Florida problem..

The "advantage" of living with cold weather is that you only need to heat the outside air to lower its RH so it can haul that moisture without having to do that A/C thing then reheat.

That would be awesome. They are calling for an exceptionally messy winter here in the NE, not in terms of snow, from what I understand but ice.
