some insurance programs prevent them from giving cars out to people under a certain age. i didnt think you could rent cars if you were 22...

Most rental companies have a 25 and over policy (as I'm sure a BMW dealership would). The few exceptions are corporate rentals or rentals through professional organizations. When I was under 25 I used to get my rentals with a corporate number - my comapny didnt mind if it was for personal use as long as I paid the bill.

Its defintiely frustrating for those responsible adults under 25.

it's standard for rental car companies (you can rent if you're under 25, but you get slapped with an additional fee) and i believe most dealerships with loaners. sometimes the dealers forget to ask though.

Wow... that sucks... I got a loaner car from BMW while I was still 16... lol. They hooked me up with their Z4 Loaner

But then again... The owner of the dealership is my friend... so I got a hook-up, lol.

FYI Mercedes Benz Canada only requires the customer be 21 years or age or older for a loaner. I'm not certain how it works for BMW Canada or if it's a per dealer policy.

18 to smoke
21 to drink
25 to rent a car

gee, I wonder which of the 3 society deems to be more detrimental... plain ridiculous!

i am 23. i brought in my moms x5 for service, we had already arranged for a loaner. i got in, dropped off the car, he handed me the keys and said '"its the blue 530 out front, we will call you when its done." a few hours later, the called me back. when i turned the car in, the guy said "it was actually done like 15 mins after you left but i figured i would give you some time to have fun with the car ; )"

First off, 25 to rent a car isn't a law so it has nothing to do with society. Those are rules that have become generally acceptable at many large rental agencies because its the most cost effective strategy. As for the other items you listed, their age limits have little to do with society. Its all about lobbyists. 18 to smoke = tobacco companies paying lobbyists to get a law passed. 21 to drink = alcohol manufacturer and distributor's lobbyists getting laws passed. Its all about how much money can be made and what group of people are willing to pay enough to get a law passed in their favor.

They need to update schoolhouse rock so kids can understand how laws are really made - with lobbyists and money.

Yeah I can agree with the age requirements. I'm not looking forward to dealing with it, and, if it were up to me:

14-drink
16-drive, rent a car and vote
18-serve your country
21-buy a gun
tobacco- illegal
