Angel Eyes?

Hey everybody,

I've been reading the forums for only about a week now since delivery of my new 335i. I love it! I'm a first-time BMW owner, but have test drove these vehicles in the past (and swore I would own one someday).

Very pleased with how the 335i handles and performs. I'm just about to cross the 500mi threshold. Not sure if I will notice a change when the car is officially "broken in?" I have been told the car will get to know my driving style. (lol)

Also, I have been wondering if somebody would explain to me what "Angel eyes" are? I've been looking at pictures and from what I can tell, its a mod with the headlights?

I've got a rear deck spoiler to install and I've tinted the windows. This car really don't need much to look good. I like to keep it subtle. (right?)

They are standard. They are the coronas around the xenons and used as the DRLs. You can see a little of its effect in my sig.

Angel eyes are the name that most people called them since they came out on the previous 5 Series (prior to E60). It then became a popular after market modification on E46's, other BMW's & even other cars

BMW calls them Corona Rings; in some countries (mostly on E92 - the coupe) they serve as the DRL (Daytime Running Lights). Other than that they clearly distinguish your car from anything else on the road ... it's BMW!

This, just as the rear LED bars are useful by being more visible & also becoming a BMW mark ;-)

I believe this all began in 2001 with the 5-series E39 headlights. In 1997-98, they started like this...

but evolved into this...

and eventually this...

Congrats on your 335i E90. The step transmission will learn your driving style in terms of throttle input and adjust accordingly.

As it's been said, angel eyes/Corona Rings are the "halos" around the headlights. Put on your parking lights and you'll see just the rings.

Whether you install the rear deck spoiler yourself, or take it to the dealership/body shop... MAKE SURE TO CLAMP DOWN BOTH ENDS while it dries. My dealer ignored my comments, and ended up having to buy a 2nd spoiler (at their cost) when I wasn't happy with the lifting corners.

In the Owner's manual and BMW documentation they are called Corona Rings.

Yes thanks for the news flash, we already knew that! C'mon, they are also referred to as "halos" and "angel eyes" outside of the BMW Owner's manual and BMW documentation.

are there any mods available to make the corona rings white like xenons? I've heard of Britex on E90s where the halos look like xenons as opposed to halogens (with the yellowish tint)

The e90 does NOT use angle eyes as the DRLs like the e92 does. This is probably because xeons are not standard the 328 like they are on the coupe. Therefor the 328 and 335 both use the halogen high beams with a low voltage pulse for the DLRs.

Nahhh, really?

Of course we all knew that, but since the user was new to this ... it's also good to let her know the official name of the item. Don't you just love it when you call the dealer and ask them for an item and the dud (I mean dude) at the other end goes, what?

Then call it what ever you want; Angel Eyes, Halo, Eclipse ring, solar ring, the ring on head of angels (halo), golden eyes ... etc.

Peace out
