I've read all the stuff on hard break ins and still don't get it...

Hey guys, I'm new so a HELLO is in order!

Anyways I've been reading up on breaking in my car. And thus far I'm still a bit confused on HOW to do a hard break in. Instead of writing what I'm confused on (that would be a lot) I'll just tell you what I've gathered from what I've read.

For an STEPTRONIC 328:
From what I've gathered, let the oil warm up, then I should take it easy for first 30 miles to avoid metal in my oil, then vay the RPM between 2, 4, 5.5 rpms for about 10 minutes at a time, and finally let the engine cool down afterwards by runnin it at low RPMs?

Does that sound correct, or have I missed the principle here?

Thanks guys

From my understanding you have pretty much summed it up. Do a post break-in oil change. Search the forums for more info, here's a good start: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32617

If you want to do a hard breakin, I think you've missed the point.

I would warm it up for a few minutes (at most) then with the step in a "manual" gear choice, alternately go back and forth with maximum acceleration and maximum engine braking for 15-20 minutes. Pick your gear based on the road you're on. There's no need to redline, the load on the engine is what's critical to seating the rings well.

Once you've got say 15 minutes on it of this, then start to increase your max RPM a bit... continuing the hard accel, hard engine braking.

In another 15 minutes drain your oil and replace oil+filter, and you should be done.

Well, you kinda look stupid doing it....let the car warm up, then get on the highway, put ur car in 3rd gear...then up to 90mph (~6000rpms) and down (~4000rpms), up and down... when going down dont hit the brake just let it coast. I was on the autobahn...on slower streets use 2nd gear -- same thing. It will be loud. Dont keep it at any one speed too long, keep the rpm needle moving up and down.

Shift into a higher gear after about 10 mins (you'll see the engine temp higher than norm). Let it cool down while your driving (dont stop the car), but try and keep that rpm needle moving. Rinse and repeat.

Im gonna do ED soon enough, and want to do this type of break-in. Just curious if anyone has any compression numbers that we could compare this to people who haven't and see where everyone stands.

I've heard that if you do the hard break-in your 335i will overheat and blow up.

Im having some doubts, if it matters with the 335.
I did a slow break-in and Shiv did a really hard one and we both ended up with same Stats.
