What's the code for the new M3?

We know the E90 code referes to the sedan, E91 for the wagon, E92 for the coupe and E93 for the convertible. How about the upcoming M3? Is it going to be E92 like the coupe or something else?

the E** refers to the body style. So the M3 coupe will be e92, the M3 convertible will be e93, and the M3 sedan will be e90.

Yeah, but BMW is giving up the "E" for the "F"

I think the code for the M3 is "F..ast")

The numbers are getting really high after the big jump from 46 to 90. I wonder if they will eventually go with a tripple digit number (E100?) I guess they have to use these numbers sparingly.

Same with the chassis code for the 911 which is reaching the 4our digit mark (currently at 997).

I meant the first part - you are correct about the numbering, that is why the codes are changing to F-* from E

They go on with the F number, see following link:

The E* alone does not apply to Body style, as all BMW's since 1955 (I believe) have been with the letter "E" in the model/body style designation. E46 (2000-2005 3 Series Coupe and Sedan), E60 (New 5 Series).

Since BMW has run out of E's; the next Generation 5 Series will be under the Body Style designation F10

So the Body Style is defined by the full lettering, i.e.:

E90 -> Sedan (323i, 325i, 328i, 330i, 335i + the diesels)
E91 -> Touring (325i, 328i, 330i, 335i + the diesels)
E92 -> Coupe (328i, 335i + the diesels)
E93 -> Convertible (328i, 335i + the diesels)

So for the "M"'s in the 3 series will be;
E90 -> Sedan (M3 Sedan)
E92 -> Coupe (M3 Coupe)
E93 -> Convertible (M3 Convertible)

or
in our language
E90 328i
E90 335i
E90 M3

E92 328i
E92 335i
E92 M3
*****You get the picture

The Actual and Exact Model code, (Engine & Body Style --> for more precision) is a set of 4 digits in the serial number.
WBAVB33 ........ -> E90 330i
WBAWB73 ........ -> E92 335i
WBAVB73 ........ -> E90 335i

Hope this helps
