How do you shift your paddles?

A week ago I realized that my paddle shifters have a convenient flat side continuation that is ideal for holding and up-shifting.

Originally I was up-shifting and down-shifting using the top of the paddles. Thus, I had my fingers positioned in such a way that my thumbs would be on the front to down-shift, while my index finger would up-shift from behind the paddle.

Then I happened to run my fingers down further over the back of the paddles and noticed that it has a flat side "plate" or edge that was still responsive... so to use this setup now my hands are at the 10 and 2 position, my thumbs are on the top of the paddles for down-shifting, my index finger is resting on the steering wheel, and my other fingers are all on the side for up-shifting.

This is my first experience with paddle shifters and the 2nd setup sounds like it was designed to be used this way. Anyway I'm just wondering how many people shift in the ways mentioned above.

I included a picture to show the locations... the side "plate" is behind the steering wheel and isn't visible in the pic but I just indicated where it is.

edit: doh can't change the poll... maybe I should've added a "Both" option, oh well. Sometimes I'll use the first shifting method if I don't feel like having my hands on the steering wheel at 10 and/or 2.

Hello Ninjaneer, do you think the paddle shifter will work on an e90-330i?

Noticed it right after having to shift during a turn. Most paddle shifters have the same type of configuration. Some though have the left side for up shifts and right right side for down shifts...or the other way around. But these paddle shifters are the most responsive I've ever driven

True! Yea this makes me take back a reply I had in another thread about it hard to engage the paddles if turning the wheel through a corner or at 90+ degrees of the wheel. Holding it the 2nd way makes it much easier to achieve this and I just didn't realize it was setup this way to begin with (paddle shifter n00b!)

I love them and use them a lot

It sounds like someone has been able to retrofit their car with paddle shifters. I don't know for sure nor do I have a direct link, but in this thread (http://e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33768) canucklion mentions that someone on E46Fanatics has a DIY about it. So maybe check that site? In the same thread there's a link to http://mrpaddleshift.com/ but sounds like it's expensive (I didn't check)

Similar questions on this (not much resolution on the topic though) found in these threads via search:
