Noticeable sound diff 06 vs 07 Carver Systems

I have a question regarding the 2006 M Roadster vs. the 2007 M Roadster and what changes might have been made between the two models.

I owned a 2006 and it was by far a better sounding system than the 2007 model I now own. I'd like to know if there's a way for me to acquire the right parts to restore the system to the 2006 performance level.

There seems to be something drastically different in the high frequency performance - the 07 is much 'brighter' in sound quality so songs with high frequency content have a tendency to be too bright no matter what I make the DSP Equalization settings. Too much fiddling with the settings and the sound turns muddy.

I'm almost convinced that the speakers were changed from one model to the next due to some sort of cost reduction activity but I have no proof. Ideas would be nice. I'm thinking of replacing the tweeters to see if I can at least get rid of the annoying high frequency performance. They function normally so it's either the tweeters or the tuning. In any case, it's much better in the 06 model IMHO.

If you're looking for a pair of <06 subwoofers for the carver system, let me know as I have a pair I'd be open to selling.

For whatever is worth, I also noticed that my '04 3.0i with the premium sound system sounded a lot better than my '08 Z4MC with the supposedly same premium sound.

I think you are correct about the sound system.

My 03 sounds better than my 08. Not much but better.

I know this is an old thread, but figured I would add to this one instead of starting basically the same one. My 03 definitely sounds 1000% better than my 07 with the same 677 hifi sound . My question to you is about the "ST" in the display. My 07 does not show it on the display, but the 03 does. The 07 also sounds noticably better with the 3.5mm plug (iPod) than the radio. The bass just muffles with the radio, but gets a little better listening to the iPod. I'm pretty sure the radio is fried or the ant. is disconnected somewhere.
Any clues?
PS. The car is going in for final warranty service in 2 days and will be mentioned then.

One more thing to add. Check you're battery. The Carver system uses a LOT of current for the Carver subs. If you're battery is not operating at a high level, there is a DEFINITE drop off in bass and mid-bass performance.

I had to install a new battery yesterday, and was simply STUNNED at the difference.

Well, this is a really old thread which I started when I owned a Z4M Roadster. The 2006 system was superb. The 2007 system was degraded in a way that's difficult to describe.

The midrange and tweeter performance was noticeably awful in the 07 compared to the 06. Christina Aguilera jammed in the 06 but I couldn't stand listening to her in the 07.

On the iPod issue, I'm pretty sure you have to check your Sound Settings - an EQ in the iPod can muck up the sound in the system. You have to set the EQ to flat so the car can apply the settings from a clean starting point. Adding an EQ on top of an EQ will result in horrible sounds and yes, I checked on this in my car and it definitely wasn't the problem. It must have been a cost savings in the speakers but I have no facts to back this speculation.

In any case, the Premium system in the 2011 M3 ROCKS so I'm happy again!

Rock on!
