Some good news on 335i fuel pump problems

Its good news

Apparently 90% or more of the problems are actually a software fault causing the high pressure pump to only put out 5 bar or less and not a mechanical problem.

And the problem has only been seen in a very small amount of the delivered cars

They have issued dealers the procedure to test/fix the problem on affected cars with a software fix.

Unfortunately there have been a few isolated cases of mechanical pump failures, but nothing more than expected for a new part launch

I'm a little confused. If it's a software problem, how is it only affecting some cars. I understand if you're talking about a physical part breaking. Obviously the part could break on some cars and not others. But if it is software related, how is it only affecting some cars. Is it something to do with environment or load? I realize that you may not know the answer to these questions (which are posed by a novice anyway), but I thought I'd ask. Nonetheless, this is good if it is true.

Its a software calibration problem on certain cars

Im guessing there may have been some problem when loading the software during manufacture or setting the calibration or something like that

Its fixed by a software recalibration and update

Any chance that BMW is making that fix when cars are going through the VPC?

There was a new 'software campaign' when my car went thru VPC which was why it took so long to get to me.
