e92 335i Step downshifts while in manual?!?!

Just got my 335i a few days ago, and I was playing around with driving in manual mode, when i noticed that even when in M, if I floor it (all the way with kickdown), it will downshift... this to me is really friggen annoying... especially since I am trying to keep the RPM's low for break in...

does everyone else's do this?

it just doesnt feel like 100% throttle without the kickdown... can anyone confirm this is actually supposed to happen?

"dont use the kickdown" is not an answer

Yes, it is annoying and I hate it just as much as you.
Just don't press the gas pedal all the way to the point where you click the button(kickdown).

Yes it is, its still 100% throttle without kickdown its just you're not in the optimal gear. It feels faster (more throttle) with kickdown because you're in the lowest (fastest) gear possible. It's really easy to avoid kickdown, its not like the click is light.

Don't use kickdown.

I've seen an earlier thread on the kickdown but can you explain what it feels like? If I press the pedal all the way down... there's still room to go? Or do I have to let up then press down again?

You should just feel a click, like you are pressing a button. Literally, just floor it. Kickdown is another mode, like Drive, Sport and Manual. Kickdown Mode overrides the other modes, even Manual. It downshifts to the lowest gear *possible* depending on your RPMs and upshifts at redline automatically. Its Full Throttle, BUT (at least in an 46), it will not accept Manual input until you let up on the accelerator to get out of kickdown mode. Its fine on the street, but NOT in AutoX/Track, where being in the gear you want and staying there is better than a sudden downshift in a turn.

How does this feel like? I imagine that in a 335i, you're going to get thrown back in your seat and end up with a big smile on your face .

Thanks for the great explanation!

I hit 140mph last Friday on an empty ramp (rarely ever has any cops) leading back on to the interstate, it was awesome. I might have already experienced this w/o knowing... I look forward to revisiting that on ramp again soon

i am still getting used to it, i keep losing the rear end every time i punch the gas like i used to in my 330... its really touchy, you have to be gentle on the gas, even if you start out in 2nd gear, which i do a lot...

Sorry, but what is kick down?? Also, is it advisable to down shift in manual mode during break-in?

Look above at my earlier post; I described it already.

There is a button under the gas pedal, when you push the pedal to the floor, if you push hard enough, you can feel this button get pressed, this is kickdown... kickdown downshifts the car as many gears as it needs to get into the "optimal" high RPM gear, usually 5k rpm or above, which IS NOT recommended during break in.

I know what it is and what it does, but isn't this "kickdown" referring to the BMW's "Steptronic" Auto transmission?
