4 Point Harness?
Anyone know of a 4 point harnesses that fits in an E90? I've been looking at the Schroth harnesses that fit into the existing belt system, but they don't have one for the E90 yet (the have all the previous 3 series models but I'm not sure whether or not they'd fit an E90). I'm using a CG lock right now which works ok, but I'd rather upgrade to something a bit more secure.

Kinda surprised no one is looking into track accessories for the E90 though I guess this forum is more street tuning. Anyone track their 3 series?

I have used the Schroth racing harnesses in two of my vehicles. They work best when the two rearmost attachment points are higher. I had mine fastened to the roll cage.
A 5-point racing harness would be better as the belt that goes between your legs prevents the harness from pulling up toward your chest. These harnesses are fairly universal and can be adapted to different cars. Find a place that works on NASCAR are NHRA type vehicles if you cannot do this yourself. I'm certain they can find a way to attach these. On my 1984 Supra, I used the mounting points for the rear passenger seat belt and the two existing ones for the driver. My OEM seat belts were still functional. |

Was the one in your supra a 4 point? I wasn't sure about using a 5 point since the stock seats don't really have a mounting point for the center belt and there's also the concern about not being able to submarine in a rollover type accident when there's no cage. I'm not quite ready to put a cage in my sedan either.

Yes, I had a 4-point, and because the rear attachment points were so low, it kept pulling up on me whenever I tightened it. My Z Car had a Corbeau racing seat.

From all the places I've read, they strongly recommend against having a fixed back race seat, and/or 5-point or 6-point harness unless you have a roll cage. The common reason I hear is as I mentioned before. If the car rolls you can't compress or submarine under the belt, so your head gets squished by the roof. This is why I'm looking at 4 point harnesses. Then there's the problem ksfrogman mentioned, that the shoulder belts tend to pull up the lap belt so it's no longer in the correct position, esp. in a crash type situation. The Schroth belts claim not to suffer from this problem though. Unfortunately, I have no experience with them, so I can't say how well they work.
At this point, I'm thinking I'll just go to the local race shop and see what we can work out. Will probably stick with 4 points though since I don't think I'm at the point where I can make my car a track car, which a cage would do.

Got a reply today from Matt Long of HMS Motorsport saying they do not yet have the Schroth QuickFit Pro harnesses for the E90. They do not yet know when they will be available.

My bet is that most people that want a track car bought an Elise or an Evo.

Probably because a 3 series isn't exactly a good choice for the track.

Its a perfect car. 50/50 balance, make it a lot easier to take around a track than most cars that have 65/35 weight ratios or worse not to mention most cars are not RWD, dont have track tuned suspension and great brakes.

Matt at HMS measured my car a couple months ago to get the Schroth sets made for our cars. My car was supposed to be the guinea pig and be used in their ad for showing the e90 quik-fit.
He called me probably 3 weeks ago to tell me he's still on it, but I haven't heard anything since. |

If you are really going to the track I would not recommend a 4 point harness. The chance of turning the car on the lid and using your helmet as a roll bar is much less likely than plowing head first into a wall. Do that with a 4 point and you will submarine under the harness. 5 point kiss the family jewels goodbye. 6 point harness is the appropriate choice.
