328i = SULEV
Interesting find...
http://www.epa.gov/orcdizux/datafile...MON_INI_R1.PDF It has 2 listing for the 328i, one is ULEV and one is SULEV (this is for US only). What's the deal? Will it be a special California version only maybe? Anybody have details of engine differences? Thanks. |

no, Sulev cars don't get diamonds, as far as I know...
CALIFORNIA 328 BUYERS! DON'T GET A SULEV! it will be gutless, and boring. get the REGULAR 328i. The e46 Sulev (M56) has more engine problems than ANY other e46, and has NO GUTS. very slow. Matt |

Sounds like you know about BMW SULEV engines... Please elaborate on the differences between a SULEV & a ULEV car...

I have been doing research on this since I got my VIN and found out my 328i was being built with the N51 engine. This is what I know so far.
This is from BMW introduction of 2007 engines: N51 Overview In order to comply with SULEV requirements, the N51 is another variant of the N52 engine. There are various measures to meet the EPA/CARB standards, some of which are familiar from the previous SULEV (M56) engine. Some of the SULEV measures for the N51 include: • Near engine catalyst with additional underbody catalyst • Secondary air system • Optimized combustion chamber geometry in cylinder head • Modified piston crown for lower compression • Plastic valve cover with integrated crankcase vent valve and separator (from N52KP) • Stainless steel fuel lines with threaded connections • Radiator with “Prem-air” coating • Throttle system - EGAS08 carried over from N52KP • Airbox with Activated carbon filter for EVAP control • Purge system pipes are made from “optimized” plastic There are 5 states that adhere to CARB SULEV engine requirements. CA, NY, ME, VT & MA. The N51 is being used in both auto and manual trannies. It is basically the same engine as the N52 with slight modifications that reduce the CO2 emissions. As far as performance, I'm told there is no perceptable difference to the N52 other than that it adds about 30 lbs. to the car. I'm waiting for my car to get on a ship in Bremerhaven and I will gladly post my impressions after I take delivery. If anyone else has the N51 and is currently driving it, maybe you could post your impressions as well.

Which should equal less power. Also, there was some discussion in another thread as to why the curb weight of the 328 has increased so much vs the 325. I suspect that the weight of the N52 328 has not increased very much. It looks like the N51 may be maybe quite a bit porkier due to the added emissions equipment. Less power and more weight is usually not a good thing.

If I feel I've been shortchanged on the power rating, I'll have the engine dyno'd and if it's it not within advertised specs, I would think a class action suit would be in order. Thinking that BMW isn't that shady, I would hope this isn't the case.
We shall see.

Honda for example in Cali has 2 HP less than the rest of us...I drove them both and did not feel any difference. Why is the Bimmer screwing things up so much? |

How do you find out if you have the N51 or the N52?

Either look on your engine block where it is inscribed or let me know the 4-7 digits of your VIN and I'll be able to tell you. PM me if you want.

But seriously, don't let your blood pressure get too high until you get the car and give it a workout. The power might be measurably different to instruments but not to the driver. But if there really is a problem, this is a matter for your legislators more than BMW. I'm certain BMW would rather leave the engine pure. Oh, did I mention I'll have the N52? Just wondered if I'd mentioned that...
