Crack Repair

Hi Guys,

I was driving today and a huge rock hit my car somehow -- i wasnt even following closely, at least a few car lengths.

Anyways, it made a crack the shape of a * ( asterisk ) the size of a penny. The crack did not go through fully.

I've heard you can have crack repair can make the crack unnoticible is that true? Its hard to believe.

What do you suggest?

I go through at least a windshield a year, sometimes 2 or 3, and yes, you can have it repaired. Depending on the depth of the crack, and how much glass was actually removed from the hit it can be repaired amazingly well. DO NOT just ignore it, as it may spread, and cause you to have to replace the whole windshield. Also, DO NOT wait to get it repaired-- or it will fill with tiny dust particles that will keep it from being repaired properly.

When you have the repair (about $40-$50 out here typically) it will either almost completely vanish, or leave a very small imperfection -- all MUCH better than where you are at now. It will also never spread.

Some shopes recommend covering it with a small piece of residue free tape to keep contamentants out until it is repaired.

Call your local glass shop (like safelite, etc)... When you live in the desert, where everything around you is small rock landscaping, you go through lots of windows...

_Scott

PS - The repair is typically a high pressure epoxy injection process, the "do it yourself" ones are too low a pressure and do not work as well. It only gets "invisible" if the epoxy can reach ALL parts of the crack.

My wife somehow always damages the car when she drives it. The last episode resulted in a crack in the upper part of the drivers side. She didn't even notice it! The dealer wanted $1600. I told them for what. The windshield doesn't even cost that much and they cited $500 for the windshield and the rest for labor. I'm waiting until absolutely necessary to replace it. I'm going to lower my deductible to $0 when I do.

Ok the pics are in... The crack repair looked pretty good, you can see a minor hair like crack with 3 branches....but the surface is now smooth and looking much better.
