Is this a drawer near the steering wheel?

Here's a picture of the european model 335i. Is that a drawer over to the left beneath the headlight switch?

Screw that. This is exactly what I need in my car. I could put my wallet and cell phone in there instead of jamming it in the glovebox with my iPod and charger. What parts do I have to buy to make it work? Can I buy the drawer and then dremel a hole in the paneling to make it fit? Are there places to latch the drawer behind it?

I thought the car was missing something. I had something similar in my Infiniti and used it to store the points cards from different stores so I didn't have to lug them in my wallet. Would have been nice if this was included in our cars. Especially considering how US magazines criticize the lack of interior storage space, and in the days of center storage compartments that can swallow a notebook computer in it's case, I'd have to agree with them.

If they're so concerned with extra knee protection, they should install the knee-region airbags that some newer models have, but I guess fulfulling the requirements of the law are enough.

There you go. I'd rather not break my knee and forget about the drug cubby.

There ARE knee airbags on the larger BMW's. They opted not to on the e90 because of cost and space issues. The knee protection they have provided, which has been proven to increase your chances of STILL WALKING after a crash, is not "just enough". it's just the best they could do under the circumstances.

For the cost of an E90 I can't comprehend them not being able to put one in. I realize it's a 3 but it's not a cheap car, look at what the Japanese are churning out for typically 10-15k less fully loaded. Space issues however I can understand.

The issue is not "cost" but rather "profit".

BMW relies on the '3' for most of it's profits. They are already charging about as much as they possibly can and still sell high numbers of '3's so, to keep profits up, they leave a lot of stuff off of the '3' that many/most other similarly priced cars have: knee air bags, rear side airbags, electric adjust steering wheel, in-dash multi-disc CD player, premium carpet and/or leather, LSD, etc.

Yes but in the UK it is only available as an option which also includes cup holders for the driver and passenger (option Code 493). I believe the US E92 models get front cup holders as a standard fit but not the storage drawer.

Ok if you want to try and order the just the storage drawer then try option Code 493 at your parts centre and see what comes up.

Big deal. It's time to stop storing everything in the car which is a habit of people living in the US. Check to see when was the last time you use these stuffs stored in you glove and central compartments? Beside a little stack of tissue in central or the insurance/registration document book in the glove compartment, I don't see anything should be permanently stored in these? Ipod has its own place in the central arm rest area already.
