how to jump start another car from your beloved e92
Hi Chaps,
As title: how to jump start another car from your beloved e92 I tried to jump start another car using jump leads and i tried connecting upto the postive and negitive terminals in the boot but got nothing from them. Theres a cover over the battery + terminal so i connected upto one of the bolts that holds the positive terminal cover in place, it had a thick red cable connected into it so i thought this was good for "juice". Connected black lead to the negitive terminal on the battery whcih had the normal battery clip. When I connected these to the positive termnial on the car with the dead battery and the earth point on that car i got no spakrks when the connection was made. When trying to start the dead car I got nothing. Tried a few different combo's but got no where. In the end i got a friend round with his Jag and using my leads I jumped the car from his battery. So, I'm led to believe that I could use the terminal points in the front of the car? how does that work? wheres the negitive battery terminal in the front? do I just use the earthing point? so i'm connecting my earthing point as the donor car to the earthing point on the receipents car? I dunno, someone set me straight. Would I have been able to take the positive battery terminal cover off without electricuting myself, that red cable looked pretty thick and live to me and I didn't want to risk touching it much. Excuse my ignorance |

It's all in the manual, I jump started my van from the car using the connections under the bonnet.

The positive post sits in the middle of your engine bay with a big red cap over it and the earthing point sticks out the side half way up the engine bay on the left hand side as you look at it.
The manual shows their location on page 144 |

The manual is confusing me in its wording,
In plain english, to help start someone elses car from my car can I connect the positive terminal from my car to theres. Then connect my earthing point (that special pole thing) to the earth point on there car? manual's description below: 1. Pull the cap of the BMW jump-starting connection up to remove. 2. Attach one terminal clamp of the plus/+ jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery or a starting-aid terminal of the vehicle providing assistance. 3. Attach the second terminal clamp of the plus/+ jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery or a starting-aid terminal of the vehicle to be started. 4. Attach one terminal clamp of the minus/– jumper cable to the negative terminal of the battery or to an engine or body ground of the assisting vehicle. ***Your BMW has a special nut as body ground or negative pole. 5. Attach the second terminal clamp of the minus/– jumper cable to the negative terminal of the battery or to the engine or body Thanks Fella's |

Yes, the red cap is the positive terminal and the special nut (pin) at the side is the earthing point.

so connecting from earth pole on my e92 to earth pole on the dead battery car is the same as connecting negitive battery terminal on my e92 to earth pole on the dead battery car?
Sorry for being so anal about this, don't want to fry any of my electrics! |
