Unusual Front Rotor wear

Is it normal for our fornt brake rotors to have a groove on the outer part of the rotor surface?
My z4mcoupe still has the maintenence warranty so I took it in to Pacific BMW here in Glendale, they said it was normal, said they were fine and did not replace them.

When you say groove do you mean the rotor has a lip on the outer edge?

The brake pads don't contact the rotor all the way to the edge. This leaves an "unworn" lip on the rotor, very common.

Is it a depressed groove or a raised ridge?

I have a depressed grove one of my rotors. When I brought it in they denied warranty service on the basis of once I came in with track pads which can, by the nature of the much more aggressive compound, score rotors. However, as evidenced by the fact that this occurs with stock pads as well (something I knew already but the dealership wouldn't admit to) this is also possible with a stock setup. I'm not exactly sure of the cause but my guess is that it has more to do with the pad than the rotor.

I guess these stock rotors are soft compared to others.

Nah. I wouldn't chalk it up to that. This kind of wear is pretty common across most marks.

I have the same thing on the fronts only.
There is the usual wear lip on the outer edge, but then there's a groove right beside it.

I was going to change to cool carbon pads, but looks like I'll have to changing rotors as well.
I just checked Tischer and was surprised that they're only $205 (we don't get free brakes in Canada)
IMO, that's a great price for 2pc alum hat rotors

^mine don't have what you describe on the fronts, just what you'd usually see on rotors with slight lip and the back the same.

The good news is the rears that seemed to be scored have pretty well worn in smooth now. Must have just been a lot of crap on them with the car sitting a long time before selling.

Got my Cool Carbon pads
Found a local tuner with them in stock at a great price.

Checked local dealers against the Tischer price; over $200 savings with Tischer (total both)

Should have gone with the StopTechs from Dave Z, unless you got an incredible price - I got front and rear shipped to Canada including the socialist take for $180 CDN... very good operating range...

Thanks. I googled and found their site earlier.

No tracking for this kid at least until late summer.

Thought about them.
These were a little more, but local cash & carry for a change.
