Milltek exhuast + BMW warranty?

I am almost certain I am going to change the exhaust on my e91 335i over to a Milltek cat back system.

I have had a search on the forum, but cannot find any reference to warranty implications with BMW?

If the exhaust is changed to something after market, and I take it in for some warranty work in the future, would they kick up a fuss??

I seem to remember, that changing the exhaust would only effect the warranty on the exhaust system..?

Many thanks
James

Changing the exhaust will only affect the warranty on the exhaust system. If anything else were to go wrong with the engine, BMW would have to prove that the Milltek was the cause of the fault - something which they can't do very easily, if at all. So don't worry, there'll be no issues with taking your car in for work.

However, I'd advise against going for a Milltek - they don't really fit very well at all on the 335i.. I know from personal experience. You're better off going and ordering a Bastuck backbox from Germany (it's what I'm using now)

Can't remember exactly - I think it was around 800 Euros ?? Best off pinging an email to them to find out. You might also want to contact Evolve (forum sponsors) who I think were about to become distributors for Bastuck in the UK

We have supplied a few of these to UK customers now on 335i and 135i. They sound good and are made well. It is not a cat back system - it is just the back box. The cost of the back box with some forum discount is £785 inc VAT and delivery.

Would this be the same case with downpipes (either catted or catless)?

I can attest to the fact they're VERY well made and sound epic

Ah, not quite. Again, BMW have to prove that the change in downpipes has affected the reliability of the engine. If you have turbo problems, then it is a possibility that BMW might not look at covering all the work on the turbos under warranty if aftermarket downpipes have been installed, because the downpipes directly affect the back pressure presented to the exhaust turbine of the turbo.

In practice, I know of several people who have had wastegate rattle issues with aftermarket downpipes installed, and still the dealer undertook warranty work on the turbos. The most important thing is that you are friendly with your dealer!

Thanks Tony - I am really tempted to get some catless downpipes and an FMIC in the near future, out the warranty issues of DPs put me off.

I feel more confident that it would be difficult to prove that problems would be due to an upgraded FMIC, but DPs might be a step too far for me at the moment.

Just curious James as your Avator has you down as a Surreyite.

My dealers fairly relaxed with mods, so I doubt an aftermarket exhaust would cause too many concerns for your dealer

Ha... the sound clip of my car will be interesting, and totally unrepresentative of what another car would be like. I have catless downpipes, and race cats, with 3" piping all the way through to the backbox.... still, I'll record it for you no problem

Same here Yahoo, but the FMIC and/or downpipes are only any use with a re-map or piggy back etc. and the dealer will be savvy to that for sure...

So they are just pointers to a remap... and thats the real warranty buster for any engine issues.
