M3 - Real world costs ?
I have seen a very nice M3 saloon and after doing some PCP figures on the net was amazed at how little I could into one for. Basically a 1 year old car £38K car, £13K deposit = ££180 pcm x 24 months x 10,000 miles pa.
The GFV or balloon payment would then be £23K. This is extremely tempting as I have sold the S3 and have always wanted an M3 but expected to be looking in a few more years time when funds allow. Would you go for it, I actually only do around 6,000 per year, what sort of mpg and other costs should I expect to incurr ? My alternative is to take another S3 which will cost me £147 pcm x 24 mth but the balloon is significantly smaller, my last S3 only cost me £1,250 over 10 months motoring in depreciation as I get a good discount on these. Decisions

Based on your numbers, the total cost for two years of ownership would be £42.320 or £5680, to you, which doesn't sound enough.
I make the interst on the outstanding £25k around £1500 |

Hi Spin
The E90 M3 to me really is the complete deal. I need the practicality of a 4 door with a decent boot, yet crave the performance/look/feel of a sports car. The M3 gives me all that Performance wise, the car is great. A pussycat around town with all the M settings de-activated and turns into a monster when you press the M button and dial in some revs! MPG isn't its best feature if I am honest . I am currently getting 16mpg pottering around town and doing reasonably short journeys. It ups to low 20's on longer journeys and have seen high 20's on motorway run (but still at 'decent' speeds) Running costs are excellent. Once the initial 1200 mile service is out of the way it doesn't require more servicing for approx 15,000 miles which is in line with most 'normal' cars. Make sure the car has decent rear tyres. Mine has done about 5k miles now (I do similar miles to you 6/7k pa) and the rears are prob half worn, fronts should last longer. A lot rave about EDC but I did not spec it as I was working to a budget and wanted other options instead. The ride is perfectly good without it and I have never wished that I could make the car harder or softer at any time but then again, if I tracked it, I may think differently? The non run-flats give a far more compliant ride than my E93 ever did on 19" RFT's! My only other priority would be DCT. I have driven both boxes and whilst I loved the 6MT car, I LOVED the DCT box more. It really 'suits' the car and engine and gives you that arcade game feel every time you drive it and the throttle blips on the downshift are a bonus I would say go for it!, I love mine (but not in this snow ).....lots |

The charges from memory were approx £4.5K. I would n't keep the car beyond the 2 years so the biggest hit would be depreciation. I got the best figures from Capitalcarfinance.net based on an LP rather than PCP so the future value is not guaranteed My only fear would be going intio negative equity but surely a 3 year old M3 manual with a great spec must still be worth £23K with only 26K on the clock?

That Balloon at £23K sounds too high to me. I'd take a look at what the risk averse manufacturer finance schemes suggest because thats what you'll be competing against come trade in / sale time.

If you want a 4 door saloon, then go with the C63 AMG. Its a freakin Animal. Much quicker than the M3 on the road.
Unless you go to the ring Every weekend then the AMG is the car to have out of those two.

The actual cost of this deal over 2 years is: Deposit = £13,000 Monthly Payments = £180 * 24 = £ 4,320 Trade in value of an 07/57 M3 saloon with 50k miles = 26,500. Lenders are basing final payments on 85% of residual value these days - so they presumably have a final value for the car of £ 27,000. I'd play safe and assume only £2k of equity left in the car. Therefore the cost per month is: Deposit + Monthly Payments - Equity / 24 or £13,000 + £4,320 - £2,000 = £15,320 This equates to £ 638 per month. Still not bad money for an M3 But .. without the £2k equity, this goes up to £720 a month, so it's a gamble on used values. I reckon M3's will stay strong, but who knows. |

Get an S5 sportback when it arrives much better looking than any 3 series, and its got that 3litre supercharged engine which is supposedly good for 370bhp before tuning

Very interesting thread....i am seriously considering trading in my 335 when it is a year old for an E90 M3. I am fortunate enough to get a large military discount and a brand new fully specced M3 could be mine for £11000 after trading in my 335.
I owe nothing on the 335, it is mine which is a nice feeling but if i take out finance for £11000 i could have an M3! Its a very hard decision as the pull of the M3 is massive in my mind but i am also happy at being totally debt free. Maybe i should keep my car and wait for the next gen M3. I will make my mind up before the summer! |

The C63 handles like a barge in my view and I've nailed 1 on a roundabout no problem and another on the Harrow exit of the M1. If you are a santa pod addict then by all means get one.
My view on this is you have the money and the deal looks good then push to get another 10% reduction on it and do the deal. The M3 is an amazing motor you won't be disappointed no matter what the spec or colour.

Do you know, every Magazine test of the C63 didnt have the performance pack of LSD and bigger brakes? and it still was close to the M3. As a road car the C63 wins. The good thing about the C63 is its a better all rounder. And it MOnsters the M3 in a straightline. And on track its oh so close. Even without the performance pack. The C63 is no barge. Difference is a tuned 335d hangs with M3's easy. It cant with the C63.
