Buying New Alloys - Are Toyo Tyres Crap?
Looking to buy these alloys from wheelbase (sadly I can't afford thousands on alloys, but think they look pretty good?):
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/18-BMW-MV2-Sty...item3ca7d03ece Couple of questions - I currently have 16" tyres on an e90, does the car need modifying to take 18" or even 19" tyres? Also, they come with tyres and theres an option for budget or Toyo tyres, i've not heard of tyres before but was going to replace my current RFT anyway, would I be better off getting them without tyres and buing ones you guys on here recommend? Here's whats taken from the wheelbase site about toyo tyres TOYO TYRE PACKAGES The premium tyre brand we offer is Toyo. With its silica enhanced rubber compound this gives outstanding road holding and control in the dry or the wet. This tyre also has low noise levels, gives good ride comfort and is long lasting. The tread patterns are the Toyo Proxes PX4 and the Toyo Proxes T1R.We also offer the S/T for the Sports Utility vehicles. |

You might actually get a better deal from the guys at MStyle - www.mstyle.co.uk - ask for Raj and say you're off the forum. Look at their replica wheel section under "MStyle Collection" You can 8J x 18" wheels all round starting from £345 inc VAT, which is a good deal cheaper than Wheelbase. If you can, see if you can get 8J fronts and 9J rears (or failing that 8.5J rears) - helps the handling. Ask Raj for advice. You don't need to modify your car to accept even 19" wheels. Incidentally, there's a set of 19" wheels for £395 from there too... Toyo tyres are ok, but nothing to really rave about. Falken 452s are well-regarded budget tyres, moving on from there are the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta, which are still very reasonably priced.

Toyo T1r is probably in the top 4 good tyres full stop.
Some of their less Proxes compounds aren't so good but the T1rs are truly excellent. I have them on my track car right now. Second set. Brilliant in the dry, and outstanding in the wet compared to almost anything I've tried.

Thanks for the information guys - much appreciated. I'm grateful for the link to the mstyle site too.
ohhhh 19" .... hrmmm I hadn't thought about going this large - are there any negatives from doing so e.g. ride/handling? |

I used Toyos on my MR2 when they were still considered budget tyres - couldn't fault them and they performed better than any of the premium brands at the time. From what I've heard they're even better now, unfortunately the prices have gone up too!

When I worked for Toyota, they sent us a DVD of the Toyo manufacturing process. Got to say, they even tested the Proxys tyre on a BMW M5 and found it outperformed many of the so called - top end brands

I'm thinking I might save up a bit more and get the 19".
Anyone got any opinions on swapping the fronts for the backs to give me a bit more time before the new tyres are needed? I'm always paranoid about the tread being too low and can never fully tell when they are ready to be changed - If I go to a garage they "definitely need changing". I often wonder if that's the garage wanting a quick buck though! |

Have you thought about getting some dedicated winter tyres fitted to your 16”?
You really want as much tread as possible with this very wet weather that we are having. Plus over the coming months they are going to be chucking loads of salt and grit over the roads. Just in time for your nice new shiny alloys. So why not get winter tyres now and in the spring change your wheels and tyres for 18” or 19” and keep the others for next winter? A colleague has toyos on his mx5 and rates them highly btw. |

excellent point.
Am I correct in thinking that I can have two non run flats on the back and run flats on the front? Would it feel worse than it does now? Thanks again everyone! |

Like with any different mixes of tyres front to rear there will be a difference in the balance of the car. |
