Oil Service on the cheap!

Hey guys,

I rang BMW last month to get my car booked in for a service. They wanted 180 for it. I said i'd provide my own oil (cost me £55) and that i'd pay them £100 for the service + filter. They agreed and yesterday i took it in for the fast lane service.

When she came out and said it was done, she told me it was £71!!

w00t!!

I paid without saying anything. She took me to the car, and they'd given it a really good clean, with alloy cleaner and wheel shine!

I checked the invoice later, and it was fine. Everything which was done was listed, it was just cheap!

Woohoo

That's pretty good value - £71 to suck the engine oil out and wash/hoover the car, not bad!

I always supply my own oil - otherwise it costs you about £150 instead of £90 if you get it from Halfords

That's a great price. Did they bill you for a new oil fitler as well? Double check that because it's essential you have a new filter. It's also advisable, although not mandatory, to change the microfilter at every oil service. Microfilter is around £40 on its own I think...

Can we buy the oil that BMW uses from Halfords? I was told by the dealer that the ones sold in Halfords is different? I have a E92 2006 325i.

Yes, the appropriate Castrol engine oil is stocked by Halfords etc.

Buying on ebay is significantly cheaper.

BMW reccomend Castrol oil - check the oil filler cap.

That's outrageous. I've never paid more than £150 for an oil service.

I paid about £200 for an oil change with filter and a microfilter plus a brake fluid exchange on my 330i. Since then I've found that I am not obligated to have service at a BMW dealership in order to maintain my warranty provided the place I go uses BMW accredited parts. So, I get my oil and filter from BMW at a discount and pay £25 for the service and computer reset and logbook stamp. All-in-all, a little over £100.

I haven't needed to change the microfilter on the 335i.

It's not a case of getting the same oil that BMW use. It's getting the oil that the dealer uses.

I know some use Castrol, some use Shell and so on. As long as the oil is the right spec for the car then you are fine and the nice thing about these cars is that the oil is very specific so it's not hard to get the spec right.
