335 First impressions

Picked my car up today. Looks nice and new and shiny but not that special.

Niggles: weird indicators - you push 'em and they return rather than stay. Not sure I explained that right but not like previous BMW or any other car I have driven.

cruise - kept hitting the indicators when I wanted to mess with the cruise stalk. I was happy with the old arrangment.

central locking - need to find if it's a fault but the boot (trunk) doesn't always seem to open like it should.

steering - definitely a bit heavier than my other car (possibly due to wheels/tyres?) but not to the extent that it's a problem.

The good bits: performance is phenomenal (I am comparing a 2000 330 Ci auto with 335i auto here, for clarification). You press the accelerator gently and the car pins you back (and bearing in mind I am trying to be kind on the run in period). My only concern is that nearly 30 years of speeding ticket free motoring is going to go out of the window. I kept having to look at the speedo to see what speed I was doing because the composure and inside noise gave no clue whatsoever. 70mph on the motorway was pretty well tickover.

Handling - now I am not a driver who has driven every car and knows what makes a car great but this car felt so comfortable going around corners. I wasn't hammering it at all but it just felt so completelty under control.

Ride - I was really worried that the 18" wheels on our terrible potholed roads would be a problem. After a day, I can honestly say the ride is, if anything, better than my E46 on standard (17"?) wheels.

Sound - with auto, the 330Ci never gave you a nice sound unless you forced it to 4500+. The 335i gives you a wonderful (just) muted roar even at low revs. Can't wait to hear the sound when you open it up!

Moment of the day: I have had the car half an hour and someone in an Impreza WRX joins the road (dual carriageway) somewhere behind me. He came up closish but then dropped back and kept a respectful distance. Probably nothing to do with my car but I liked to think it was a sign of respect! (For the car, not me!)

Thats interesting what you say about "not that special"... the photo you have posted certainly looks good, and the 18" wheels are the ones that I'm planning on going for which I think really go well with it. It might not be as controversially styled as other cars but I think the sleek elegant look, especially with the engine you have chosen would make it special enough for me!

Also interested to hear you say that the 18" wheels and sports suspension(?) is not too harsh a ride - the sports suspension is default on the 335i is it not?

Good luck with it and keep us posted on how you get on with it. You can never have too many comments.

Is that the beige interior you have gone for?

Thanks.

The car looks "classy" rather than "sporty". It's probably no bad thing when (with due respect to all you modders out there) you can stick a spoiler and fat wheels on anything to make it look sporty. It looks good and, at my age, something like this is probably more appropriate!

The engine was definitley the thing for me which is why my extras list was modest compared to some guys on here! (Leather, auto, 18" wheels, front PDC)

Sports suspension is standard and after only a day, I would say they did a great job of balancing everyday comfort with handling. Like I said, I am not an expert driver so maybe someone more informed has a view.

The interior is actually jade grey. I know! Grey on grey! I have beige in my last car so wanted a change but really liked the light coloured interior. Choice of paint colours was a disappointment to be honest and I am sure that there will be many others like me who cloned the advertising pics!

The car looks superb David !

BMW have played safe with the styling but it is a handsome car, maybe not racey, but discreet and classy is certainly not a bad thing.

It looks fantastic to me and has the performance of a rocket ... so very stealth like.

I like it very much !

Be extra pleased you are one of the lucky ones to have taken delivery so early in the car's life ... there won't be many on UK roads at the moment, so enjoy the EXCLUSIVITY

Looks good !

I followed one yesterday (I actually saw 2 at lunchtime) first sighting in the flesh and it's a nice looking car.

Main thing I noticed is that it is a little more muscular in appearance than it seems in the pics.

I'm planning on getting the Jade grey also... I think the contrast with the dark carpets and bits on the door with the 'almost white' leather looks great. Will be interested to hear how the light coloured seats stay clean over the next few months!

Yes, that's the one problem with light seats. Mind you, my beige ones didn't look too bad after 6 years of use. I am sure if you knew how to do it, you can clean them relatively easily - or pay someone to do it!

Funny what you say about the cruise control.

The other day some poor guy must've thought I was a nutter when I was tapping what I thought was the cruise control to lower my speed, when I was actually tapping away at the indicator stalk and hence flashing my full beams at him!

Nice car by the way.

I've been doing that with the lights when I am playing with the cruise too. Still not got used to it!

On a technical (?) point, is there some reason why the seatbelt arm thing comes out sometime and not others?

Oh, and the lights in the door that someone posted a pic of. Do I have those? If so, how do I switch 'em on?

btw, I STILL can't get over how phenomenal the acceleration is! Someone asked me what it was like and the only thing that came to mind was a go kart!
