Car Adverts

Why do some car companies make such rubbish adverts?

For me, the number one priority in a car is that it's fun to drive. I realise other people are interested comfort, safety and economy. I even accept that some people buy a car specifically because it's not going to break.

But ...

What was going on at Ford when they hit upon their latest marketing campaign - 'kinetic design'?

Did a bunch of marketing people really sit down and brainstorm this?

I imagine it went something like this:

Marketing Man "What's the most interesting aspect of our cars from the customer perspective?"

Marketing Lady "You mean our Unique Selling Proposition?"

Marketing Man "Yeah that"

Marketing Lady "hmmn ... difficult"

Marketing Man "Well the cars pretty dull to be honest. It's not nice to look at, the engines are shite and the handlings a bit inert."

Marketing Lady "It does sort of look like it's moving, even when it's standing still"

Marketing Man "You are right, although why anyone should care is beyond me. Anyway, that's going to have to do, lets head down to Starbucks for an Iced Machiatto"

I guess this is also how we ended up with the Citroen car that turns into a robot and the Vauxhall Corsa being driven by badly manufactured puppets.

Well if I had to choose, I prefer it over a Z4 driving round in paint

I agree, but at least the BMW advert has a half-decent car in it

I don't know if you've ever driven the new Mondeo but it really is a cracking car, my Father In Law has just bought a 2 month old Titanium estate with 4k on the clock for £15k with xenon’s, adaptive headlights, Bluetooth, leather, 18" alloys, duel zone climate, I really have to question spending double on the equivalent 3 series touring

Fair point, perhaps I should have said a half-decent looking car

I'm with you on this. Although the current Fiesta is a good car. A very good car. And the Focus RS too for that matter

Mondeo not so much

I'm sure this is right and that's sort of the point.

If it's a good car, why is it that the best thing they can find to talk about is that it looks like it's moving when its standing still.

The older Mondeo's looked sikk. These are ST220s:

Beastly. And more exclusive than 3 series Bimmers

It's still a mondeo sunny. Looks like a grandads car. Not beastly at all in the slightest. Slow for the HP also

That's like comparing a 320d with a 135i

And there was me thinking we were having a joke. Fine. Be a tosser about it

Obviously I know which is the better driver's car of the 2. Same with the Modeo vs rs. Obviously different markets for both in theory. Yes? However - My only point was that not all fords are cack. Any comparisons drawn are irrelivent to the OP's point.

Mondeo is a cack 3 series and RS is probably a cack 135i, to bring over your comparison. But you can't directly compare the 2, and nor was I trying to?

What are you actually getting at, anyway?

Mondeo is now closer in size to a 5 series for less than a 3 series. If I were paying out green ones from my own pocket to buy outright it might be on my radar. I lease hire my cars so the 3 series wins on monthly costs hands down.

All car companies in recent years have become cack in their ad campaigns, Ford especially. At least the Z4 and BMW's 'Joy' campaign had some thought and fun, if a little too 'arty', behind it.

Bring back, this cars eats the road, uses gallons of fuel, and is a widow maker type of ads. Those were the days.

I like the joy advert in a corny kind of way. I've made a game of annoying whomevers in the house by repeatedly pointing out the advert an in particular whenever a 3 series appears

But I agree, we need some real "look at the hole in the atmosphere after flooring this car" adverts

Yep, Still want a Mk I Capri because I saw an ad in 1969 when I was first born saying that it would make me 'more of a man, a driving God and chicks would throw themselves onto my cock'.
