Major moment this morning, almost a ‘wait for the crunch’
Ended up travelling on my favourite B road and fancied a bit of fun, so DTC on, into M and paddles all the way...
Now it was damp this morning so first open corner I went around, I deliberately prodded the throttle in 2nd to feel for grip. Back end stepped out, corrected and guess what – not much grip. So I decided to take this drive easy and the next corner I took in 4th at about 45ish, on way out I progressively put the throttle down and snap, back end just went..... First correction didn’t catch it enough and I was then about to go sideways into a 10ft brick wall (surrounding a very nice county house estate) Next bit was all in slow motion and was kinda waiting for the crunch of car into brick...I ended up over correcting briefly before I was then going straight again. Big Phew, with just lots of adrenalin running through my body. A couple of cars then drove past a few seconds later, having seen all of this – they must have thought I was a right ol’ d&ck! Still shocked at how & why the car stepped out so much, especially in 4th but guess RWD mapped cars need the upmost respect in these autumnal conditions.

Crikey. Glad you and your pride + joy are unharmed!
Personally I never hit DTC when its damp, because I find even with all systems fully ON, its very twitchy and difficult to manage in the wet..

I can’t be far from you TMP, if it’s any consultation it hasn’t stopped raining virtually all week and I mean raining! That coupled with wet leafs etc on the rural roads, cira 280bhp rear, wheel drive, it’s easily done.

Funnily enough today was the first time I've thought DSC has saved my ass. Slight wobble as I pulled out of a junction and DSC kicked in straight away; nothing major but the fact oncoming traffic was passing at 60 on a single carriageway meant there wouldn't have been much room for error if I'd had to correct myself.
DSC stays on unless it's completely dry! |

Change to some Vredestiens!
Miles more grip in these slippery conditions than the OE Bridgestones. There are a couple sections of road near me that the surface is polished like glass. In the wet the slightest dab of the throttle would have the car skating sideways. My 92yr old nanny in a fiesta on 165 wide tyres would out corner my bmw. Now I don't have to slow down to a walking pace, just drive on the same as the rest of the highway. |

was your DTC all the way off or just pressed once? i find when its half off its the best, too invasive when its fully on. Nothing worse though than that shittin your pants moment expecting a crash!

This is one of the thoughts I had when changing my car recently. Having had and become used to 4WD it really is noticeable when you drive a 2WD drive car, even in the dry.
It is surprising how quickly you can still travel even in the wet with 4WD and a decent set of tyres (non run-flats I hasten to add). The downside is IF 4WD/AWD gives way, then it is does so big time and is, from what I've been told, harder to 'get back'. Complacency shouldn't over rule common sense me thinks. Least you're ok. You do need to show some respect rear wheel drive in these horrible damp conditions, especially when you have alot of torque going through on the diesels.
I drive a Z4M coupe, and its generally scary around every corner in the wet |
