Rock damage on door

Hey all,

Had a horrible experience today. Was driving along the highway when a semi-truck came along with a load of rock. A large rock (about 1" in size) fell off the side, came bouncing on the road and gave my E90 passenger door a good chunk.

Once I got to my destination, I took a look and the rock did a horrible job on the clear coat and close down into the paint. It's about .5" long and really white/etched looking.

Any suggestions other than washing it out and just ignoring it? I'm afraid that if I try to put touch up clear coat or paint on it, it'll just be more visible.

wash it off, and feel the scratch, if your nail catches the scratch, most likely the paint+clearcoat has been wiped off by the rock

take it to a reputable detailer, he may be able to fill the scratch in with paint and buff it back to its original glory

Finding the truck driver is also a key. That truck company should be responsible for your pain. The truck company has responsibility when hauling rocks to make sure it does not come off the bed and hit someone. Trucking company have strict rules they must follow because of the nature of their business. Too late now but in the future, get the driver licenses (i mean license plate), time and location. That is just terrible what happened to another innocent driver. 18 wheelers and pickup owners/drivers need to be help responsible for how they secure their load so that it does not fall out of the bed and causes damage to someone or their car.

Last week, I saw a pickup truck loaded with some furnitures (cabinet, sofa, ect) on 610 loop and the sofa fell off the truck in the third lane of a 4 lanes highway. He pulled up on the side of the road and just sad there like a dumba$$ (uh, what should I do now ). He could have just spent extra time tying it down but no too lazy and could have seriously caused a major accident. I guess ppl don't use common sense anymore. Wonder what our kids are being taught in school nowaday.

I hate trucks, they always spin up rocks the size of a planet

when I see one, I stay the hell behind, or in most cases, speed up and pass them

the worse scenarios I ever been in is in this big city where I lived, we have lots of trucks on freeway. I hate trucks that get themselves into mud (they cannot help it because they drive into construction sites which are muddy all the time). The mud get stuck on the under carriage area of the truck and dried up. I was behind such a truck and one of those dried up planet earth mud piece decided to come loose when the truck hits a rough patch of pavement and it came flying straight into my hood. I had to lived with that scar on the hood and learned my lesson to never follow trucks. I should have pursue the driver and get the license plate.

This happened to my e500. 2 nice scratches in paint and clearcoat gone. The only way to make it look right was to repaint the hood. Car is only one year old and this would kill the resale value. The body shop touched it up. Unacceptable to nuts like us but there was nothing else to do. Good reason to lease but of course I didn't.

Good job! I just hope that when something like that happens to me and a truck is the cause of damage on my car in some way, be it rocks flying up from the tires or things dropping off the back or whatever, that I'll stay calm enough to remember to get the trucking company's name on the side of the truck and the plate number. Even for something so basic, when something like that happens, sometimes you forget even the most basic of stuff.

That's exactly what I was trying to do.

The rock literally fell off the side of the truck, which is why is hit the side of my door instead of the bonnet.

I speed up too. I just always worry that I'm going to get nailed when I do because before I speed up I'm going 10MPH over the limit to begin with and probably speed up by another 15MPH to pass. I wouldn't like to get a ticket for 25MPH over the limit. The chances are slim that I'd get caught in that 20 second period or whatever, but there's still a chance.

Good point. But thankfully, speeding wasn't a worry. The truck was going much slower than the speed limit, so I only neared the limit during passing.
