Would you have bought the diesel if it was a manual?

I never considered the diesel once I found out it wasn't offered in a manual. Every now and then I question that decision but then remember how fun cars are with a manual gear box.

I still would have had it in auto. That's one factor that never affected my decision. There's no reason to hate on the auto box, it is every bit as good as a manual.

No. I have no need for a diesel. I like my gas. Besides, the gasoline versions faster.

I would have liked a ~2.5l turbo manual transmission diesel, I don't really want to drive a slushbox no matter how "good" people claim it is

The 335d is awesome, but wasn't what I was looking for. Whether or not it had a 6MT wasn't relevant to my interests.

Hating on it? My point was never to see which was better and I didn't say anything negative about the auto. I simply prefer the manual for my driving experience and wish it was offered in the d.

Absolutely. I was interested in the diesel for two minutes until I found out it was coming only in automatic. That was the end of my love affair.

I'm sorry, I should have clarified that I meant that as a general statement. It wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular.

I'd love to buy one if it was in the budget. I used to "have to have" a manual in my cars, but seriously don't care anymore. Too tough to enjoy that manual and try to enjoy my coffee taking the kid to school in the morning.

I wasn't looking for a manual car myself when I was looking, but I did want AWD which unfortunately the 335d did not offer, otherwise I may have considered one.

I would have bought it if it came in coupe form and had a manual like overseas.

I'd bet if the 335d was offered with a stick, it would be a bit pointless. You'd be out of first gear in less than 2 secs. You'd need a pretty sturdy clutch too.

I drove a Jetta TDI with the manual and then the DSG. I have to say, being a manual "purist" that the TDI with a stick is very hard to launch in first gear, and really wasn't all that satisfying.

Just my opinion. I have a 5 speed Alfa 164 S and Peugeot 405 Mi16 that give me my manual fix...an automatic 335d is more than fine in my book.

I might have considered it if it were available a few years back.

The 335d doesn't have a manual overseas.

My dad use to make me do the shifting because he was eating.

My Bad, I was being more general in that I would want a diesel manual coupe. Didn't realize that the 335d didn't come manual there either. Maybe the 320d then

The 335D has almost all of its torque on tap just above idle. To put that much power through a manual gearbox at launch would quickly lead to a massive transmission failure. Although there are several BMW engines that can match or exceed the torque of the 335D, they are not diesels and the gas motors need to be well above idle speed to start building torque and would not hit the gearbox with maximum torque until the car was already moving.
When Mercedes first introduced the E320 CDi to the market it was only sold with their 5 speed auto. The new 7 speed auto was not able to deal with the torque values generated by the 3.2 CDi at launch. It was also the reason AMG abandoned their outstanding boosted engine lineup after the 7 speed replaced the 5 speed auto. The 7 speed was happy with the higher powered new AMG engines because they did not have the high torque at launch like the older boosted engines that were forced to keep the 5 speed auto until they were dropped from the lineup.
