Hey Chaps,

I want to buy a cheap base unit PC - nothing flash, just good enough for work stuff.

Anybody recommend somewhere to buy ? Obviously there are tons of places on teh web just want to know if anyone has used one of them and got good service.

Always found Dell fine for desktops.

But DO NOT use PC World or you'll end up topping yourself.

Why not use newegg and build it yourself? Way cheaper then buying from a store.

newegg is a US company and your on a UK board - that would be my first criticism

Anyway, I'd recommend Dell for sure. I build all my own machines but my mum wanted a new machine and I realised I could beat my own spec machine all ways up bar the graphics card for sub £300!! It cost me £1100 to build mine in the same year albeit with a £350 graphics setup..

They are completely unbeatable right now due to the buying power they have..

Now, if you want a REALLY cheap machine - I might recommend a refurbished unit from bigpockets. Again for my family, I bought a refurbished quad core machine for my nan (!! ) from them for £180 and its been perfect.

So cheeeaaap: www.dell.co.uk
really cheeeaaap: www.bigpockets.co.uk

Hope that helps buddy..

Oh, I assumed that newegg shipped everywhere since it was internet based. Do you have an uk newegg? Building your own is always so much cheaper.

£75 off ebay. Tons of dell Optiplex's with 2gig of ram, dvd-rw etc. I use them for desktops in my work env. Plenty fast for office and web apps.

Also getting hold of some old G170s for next to nothing to run as domain controllers. The UPS costs more than the machines. In fact the cabling costs more than the machines lol

To prove i'm not a cheapskate all the time - I have a £2500 server, which has redundant everything, but it has a DNS problem which affects active directory (SBS2003 - steer clear), but because it has 3rd party app on it, which they won't let me reinstall and can't do themselves remotely so i have to pay for someone to come up to Glasgow and install over 2 days (it's a fekking DB and vb app!), so i can't blat it. My thoughts are now, buy lots and buy cheap for redundancy lol And i'll figure out the install of the app on one of the spare machines on my own.

Check www.dabs.com and www.ebuyer.co.uk.

Then order from whichever is the cheapest. I've used both companies many times, they are usually the best value on the net and have never let me down.

I always found dabs to be quite expensive?

Dell would def beat them for a new build. And aria.co.uk piss all over them for component prices...
