Considering changing the 335d for an E55 AMG
Hi Guys,
Considering changing the 335d for a 2006 E55 AMG. Does anyone have any experience of the E55? Aside from the fuel economy, what am I likely to miss? What is the reliability like? Is the performance usable like it is in the 335d? The pricing of these cars is falling dramatically I guess as they are considered uneconomical.... BUT.... Are they a "Good" car? |

I think the main selling point of these AMGs is the noise they make, which is almost always incredible (for the V8 ones). I don't think the interior quality is upto E9x standards, depending on which model. Pre 04 can also rust.
I test drove a CLK55 Cabrio (03) today to replace our mini (which we've sold, hurray!) - the interior was looking tired, and it only had 40k miles. Made a good noise though - nascar like! |

My reason is that it "seems" affordable for an awful lot of car. Of course, I haven't yet done the homework on servicing or tyres etc.. But can't believe its a whole lot worse than a 335d

All I can say is, The current C63 AMG is a weapon. It is also built to a very high standard. It deffo felt like a 60k car.

Because sometimes a change, just for changes sake, is good.
And maybe sometimes, maybe, just because an AMG Merc sounds..... wait for it.... I feel a DXB moment coming on..... it's coming..... THE TIT'S! |

I seem to remember that the supercharged AMG 55 engine needs to produce 600BHP but only 500 is available as the supercharge absorbs 100horses. That is why Merc dropped it.
The new 6.2 litre normally aspirated engine is waaaaay more fuel efficient E63s are getting cheaper now the ne shape E63AMG is out. Also with with the C63 getting a more fruity 500+ BHP engine in 2010, I suspect the older ones values will start to slide. They have been holding up well compared to the used prices of M3s. I'm going to run my 335D thru to Feb/March then make a decision to change or hold.

The fuel economy debate is always interesting. One of the reasons I bought the E92 335d was for the wonderful blend of performance and fuel economy as I was expecting to be travelling to the Continent a few times p.a. Personal circumstances changed and I went back to petrol and a manual box and ultimately 'suffered' the reduction in fuel economy.
That said on my now annual mileage of 10/11k the extra financial outlay is not greatly significant. Although it would be nice if the S5 returned the same figures as the Porka T lol. |

Just shows how advanced the Porker was!
I find range very useful - to be honest a few mpg here or there doesn't really matter - but having to keep stopping does. And in my 20-25mpg car with a 60 litre tank, I was having to stop ALL the time!! |

Not just advancement. The porsche was a smaller engine. Less cylinders. It had much more torque so general driving it takes less to get a move on therefore less fuel.

Honestly. Unless i was at the ring every weekend. I dont think i will buy an E92 M3. The C63 seems the better everyday car.

I think the SL is the only benz that feels sport! I recently test drove the e63 and the cls63 and I just didnt feel connected to the car. I would keep the 335d just becuase its fuel efficient, Im sure yours has warrenty, its newer, and I think its an overall great car. Ditch the e55 its dated, the new E-Class just came out.

As Andrew said sometimes a change is nice. Doesn't mean I would not buy another BMW, goes without saying that I would always consider one and test drive one. |
