Any Denver/high altitude guys owened both an M3 and 335?
I've spent considerable time in a 335 around Denver, but limited time in an M3 and never back to back. I'm curious how the two motors compare at this altitude to somebody who has owned both. I know the altitude affects the M3 significantly more than the 335, so does the M3 motor still feel substantially stronger?

I own an M3 but have driven the 335 quite a bit as well. The N54 motor in the 335 loses less power at altitude like any FI motor, so a 335 will feel closer to an M3 in terms of acceleration at altitude than it does at sea level. A 335 has great grunt off the line (higher torque available earlier) and it is a really impressive car, the M3 is just in another league once the speeds get higher. For around town driving, the 335 may feel faster to you since the M3 requires for work/revs to get all of the performance it has. Hope that helps.

signes is right. I had an 08 m3 and my wife has the 335...around town the 335 is a better motor for daily driving. the m3 just takes so much longer to get into the power. but the cars as a whole are night and day. the m3 is a MUCH MUCH more fun car to "drive". I know people will roll thier eyes at this but if you put a slightly stronger version of the 335 motor in the m3 it would be a great compromise.

m3 vs 135i high altitude
I live at 9,000 ft above sea level (Ecuador). I currently own a 135i. I'm thinking about buying an m3, however I'm afraid the 135i would be faster than the m3 at this altitude, 0-60 is what matters at the end of the day.
A normally aspirated engine would loose aprox. 27% (414hp becomes 302hp) power compared to 15% (300hp becomes 255hp) power for a turbo engine, at this altitude. But still the m3 is heavier + same torque as 135i. Any comments? Thanks |
