What to look for when buying a CPO 335i?
Hi my friend is going to get a CPOed 335i coupe... and he's worried that the car has been modded and abused to death, what are some things to look for (evidence)? TIA.

What year? AT or MT?
I would look for an oil cooler. Check the cowl for missing bolts or prevalent scratch's. I've been in my ecu box a million times and that area is beat lol.

Theres actually more AT guys here than MT from what i've seen. Chipped AT's are quicker so I wouldn't think that just because its an AT it isn't modded.

Have someone look at the ECU and wiring to see whether it has been tampered with. Sometimes it's impossible to tell but others have left evidence.

Get with the dealer selling the car. Ask to see any & ALL of the service/maintenance records on the car. This will tell you exactly what types of repairs, warranty work the car has received.
I always request a car to be checked out by a BMW Master Tech or shop foreman with myself present. I want to know if there are screws/fasteners missing, how scuffed the underside of the car is and what parts have or have not been replaced. Check to see if the windshield has been replaced. Many times replacement wiindshields will be noisier with regard to wind noise. Dealers won't normally have records showing whether the car has had any paint/body work so be sure to look at the Carfax report. Get caught up on the TSB (past & current) to be sure of what has been shown to be a problem with these cars & what has or has not been taken care of ....... Eg. HPFP (some dealers did voluntary replacements), "rear bulb out" errors requiring new circuit boards etc ...... GL |
