09 LCI Idrive controller - Sod it.

Well, I nearly got there. But sod it, I officially give up today.

After just coming back from the dealers where they ordered the wrong part I think I should hand this project over to someone else who hasn't gone through the whole process!

So here's the story:

Saw an LCI Idrive controller for sale and bought it (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=273245).

Tested it in my car, which involved taking out the centre section (which I can now do in seconds with all the practice I've had!) and plugging it in... worked perfectly! All the buttons worked and the knob is just a nicer thing to behold (ooeerr). Soooo much easier to use going straight to all the menus.

So, realised it wouldn't fit within the standard trim I went ahead and ordered a new interior centre console panel which took 5 days to arrive from Germany.

Back to the car I went, out came the centre panel again, went to fit and realised there is a something missing from the puzzle... a piece to hold the controller onto the trim. You can see it in the picture on this site half way down http://paultan.org/2009/04/06/2009-b...0d-lci-review/ its the bit of plastic in between the controller and trim.

After talking with the dealer again I explain the situation (after one dealers head exploaded at the idea of fitting something LCI to a non-LCI car, I had to get the centre trim from a different dealer 20 miles from me!) they ordered the black plastic clip, which arrived today. Another trip to the dealers and guess what. It's for a bloody non-LCI I drive controller. At which point I actually said out loud "Sod it" and walked out.

If anyone wants to take on the mantle and buy the trim and idrive controller from me please get in touch (the trim is in brushed aluminium). Id say £200 is fair given I've just spent £300+ on those 2 parts.

Otherwise I may just calm down, leave it a few days and try again. Either way it'll need the part number for that piece (so if anyone knows, or has access to one to see the part number, Id appreciate a heads up!)

... probably time for a coffee.

The part they got for me this time around was the one numbered 16 (old version) along with all the screws etc. I did ask where the LCI version was but he couldn't figure it out, and I lost patience. Can't quite figure it out looking at that either... any ideas?

51167155634 x1 LCI version of part #16
07147122390 x4 screws
51418144600 x1 circlip
07146976688 x4 sheet metal clips

EDIT - OOPS!! - these part numbers are still the same for the pre-LCI cars, so ignore the above!!!!

Now having looked and both non and LCi, it does appear to be the same part, so realoem isn't up to date, which is a bummer.

That's exactly the same as on the BMW system though, I don't think it's the same part personally... maybe one of the other parts holds it in place. Dunno if I have the patience, might ebay the things seperately just to get some money back off them.

What about some scrap merchants - surely a few LCI cars have already been totalled and this part could be rescued??? Again, you need patience, but otherwise you'll be losing quite a bit of cash within a short amount of time.

Not really. Just found this place on a quick search which is the sort of thing I was thinking of, just a matter of finding a few, then calling every week or so (unless they have the facility to log what you're after and call you)

Lol. In true style I ordered the left hand drive version, and now the right hand drive too! But thanks Technic (and Frenchi who PM'd me the p/n earlier, albeit for a LHD, I should have checked!). Only a fiver a piece so no worries there.

If I understood some other threads correctly, I can't fit this to my 2006 Prof Nav E91 as the car has the original haptic feedback iDrive - hence the rotary part wouldn't work (but the buttons and four way joystick action would). As the rotary is so important this makes it a non-starter. Is this right?

Apparently so yes, basically if you have any kind of force feedback in the controller your Aled Jones at a Catholic Bishops convention, i.e. stuffed.
