325xi / 330xi AWD

I am debating between the 330i SP and getting a set of winter wheels/tires, and waiting on the 330xi this fall. Anyone have any idea when the pricing/options on the 330xi will be available? The 530xi info came out with the new 3 series info in March, about 3 months before the 5 xdrives are available. Based on that, I'm thinking July/August for the 330xi info. Any rumors/thoughts?

Jon, I've hear that the xi will be available in September, with dealers taking orders in July and around $2000 more than non-AWD cars. Has anyone heard anything else different?

How much snow do you deal with? I have a friend in NJ with winter tires and he's been fine dealing with snow in the wintertime. He said with his blizzak snow tires he doesn't need AWD.

I did a lot of reading about this on some other boards and it seems that the consensus is that even if you've got all-wheel drive, if you are dealing with heavy amounts of snow, you should have winter/snow tires. In which case it also seems to be agreed that properly equipped (smaller rims and snow tires) RWD cars do just about as well in the snow.

I was worried about this as I'm moving to Seattle where they experience some snow for a short time in the winter.

Armen brings up a good point, your tires are the points of contact with the road, it doesn't matter if you have 8 wheels (and 8-wheel-drive on your car) if the tires can't keep traction properly. Jon, if you're not dealing with a crazy amount of snow just get the non-AWD, some cheap steel wheels and the best snow tires out there (blizzaks) and you'll be fine. Tirerack.com sells steel wheel/snow tire packages for the e46 and I'm sure they'll have the same for the e90 shortly after it comes out.

I've gone back and forth on this issue in my mind for months. I live in Cincinnati and get about 10-15 days a year of snow/ice issues. The problem is that many times it is not 12 inches of packed snow we drive in - it is more like an inch of ice or 3-5 inches of slush/ice, etc. I really want to avoid swapping out tires twice a year. Just seems like a hassle. I know people do it, but it just isn't that appealing. If the xi is not good in the snow/ice with the allseasons, that is one reason to just ditch the xi and get the 330i and do the wheel/tire swap, but I'd like to know whether people have had good results with the past xi versions with allseason rubber.

I don't know if this helps, but I live in Chicago and the X-type with all-seasons is amazing. I can out-accelerate SUV's and cars easily (still safely and w/i reason).

I was wondering the same thing if I should wait for the AWD or go with the regular RWD. I live in the Poconos and believe me we get our fair share of snow and ice. In particular, just the last two years have been the worst for ice than I can ever remember. We just had a major snow storm in the last week of March. It was raining, then it turned to ice, and then it changed over to all snow and we got pounded with about 14", with about 2" of solid ice under it.

I know comparing BMWs to Chevys is apples and oranges, but my sister has a 2000 Blazer and she was stuck in a parking lot, even with the 4 wheel drive. It was impossible to get that Blazer out of the parking lot. I know, I was there! So we had to walk home in this storm, and as soon as we made it out to the main highway, traffic was backed up for miles, and the snow plows were struck!! The industrial highway plows with 10 wheels were burning out the tires trying to make it up the hill, as we walked right past them.

All this was going on while I was contemplating getting the 325 with RWD or AWD, and I realized when it does snow bad, usually the streets are just dry by the next day anyway, after the plows get to them.

I hope you enjoyed my amusing little anecdote. That's a true story, by the way. But the point is, get the AWD if you think you'll be better off in your mind (because you won't want to make payments on something you didn't really want), but I personally couldn't wait until the fall, and after this incident, I kind of look at it like there's no controlling the weather, you know?

Hey dude, I don't know about you but if the snow plows are getting stuck, I don't expect my Bimmer to go anywhere.

Found this information on upcoming 325xi and 330xi AWD (from commander_crash at bfest)

Handling ride & braking:
xDrive all-wheel drive system, electronically controlled with variable front/rear torque split and traction control (will impact performance and fuel economy a little bit due to weight and mechanism)
Front suspension and subframe is stell, instead of 325i's aluminum. Also, an aluminum thrust plate for added strength.

Exterior

High-intensity headlight cleaning system with retracting jets is standard on xi models

Options:
Sports package: adds 130-mph top-speed limiter. Deletes sport suspension calibration (all xi models have their own calibration), 17x8.0 alloy wheels, star spoke design with 225/45R-17 H-rated all season tires.

Other:
active steering not offered, can add 17x8.0 front/17x8.5 rear performance tires along with the sports package and raise the limiter to 149mph.

330xi Details are nearly the same. Tires are the same as the 325xi unless optional tires added.

Specs:
Weight distribution (manual trans):
325xi @ 52.6/47.4 (compare 325i @ 50.3/49.3)
330xi @ 52.6/47.4 (compare 330i @ 50.6/49.4

Curb Weight:
325xi @ 3560 (compare 325i @ 3285)
330xi @ 3627 (compare 330i @ 3417)

The seating line up has changed across the entire 3-series line.
Regular: 6-way manual seats
ZPP: 8-way power seats + lumbar
ZSP: 10-way manual seats with power back-bolsters ala M3
ZPP+ZSP: 10-way power seats + lumbar with power back-bolsters ala M3

325xi vs. 330xi

A BMW press release stated that the touring wagon will be released in October as a 325xi. Does anyone know when the 330xi is slated for release??
